Gerry Aird<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

President of Dominica, Her Excellency (H.E) Sylvanie Burton, described the late Gerald \u2018Gerry\u2019 Aird as a distinguished businessman, devoted philanthropist, and exemplary citizen.<\/p>\n

The President’s words of praise and appreciation were expressed while addressing the formal opening for the first meeting of the third session of the 11th Parliament, on Friday.<\/p>\n

Mr. Aird passed away on July 18, 2025, following a period of illness.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Aird was a devoted Catholic, committed family man, and a pillar of strength within his community,\u201d she said. \u201cHe dedicated his life not only to his family and business, but also to the service of his church and the communities of Eggleston \u00a0and Giraudel.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to H.E. Burton, under his wise and visionary leadership, the family business \u00a0H.H.V Whitchurch and Company Limited grew steadily in both scope and reputation, overcoming many challenges along the way.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, the company stands as one of Dominica’s leading enterprises, a testament of his perseverance, business acumen, and unwavering commitment to excellence,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cBut Mr. Aird\u2019s impact extended well beyond the realm of business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burton added, \u201cHe served on several national committees and made invaluable contributions to the development of tourism, culture, \u00a0environmental conservation, and community building.\u201d<\/p>\n

Furthermore, she said, through his efforts, he played a key role in shaping Dominica’s socio-economic landscape.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was widely respected for his integrity, calm and generous spirit, exceptional leadership, and professional demeanor,\u201d she stated. \u201cMr. Aird’s legacy is not only written in the journals of Dominica’s business history, it lives on in the lives of those he helped, the communities he uplifted, and the values he championed. He was a true patriot, wholly committed to the progress of Dominica \u00a0and the well-being of its people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burton went on to state that Mr. Aird will be solemnly missed by all who have had the honor of knowing him.<\/p>\n

Martin Joseph<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Meanwhile, she took the opportunity to acknowledge the sudden and deeply saddening passing of a dear friend, Mclean Joseph known as \u2018Martin\u2019, who diligently cared for the grounds of the government headquarters for many years.<\/p>\n

Martin passed away on Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital, a loss that came as a great shock to all who knew him.<\/p>\n

\u201cMartin was hardworking, cheerful, and kind-hearted, well-known and well-loved by officers and visitors alike,\u201d Burton stated. \u201cHis friendly smile and warm disposition brought light to many, and his unwavering dedication to his work was a quiet yet powerful example of service and pride in duty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c He, too, will be dearly missed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The Government of Dominica will hold an official funeral in recognition of the late Gerald \u2018Gerry\u2019 Aird, honoring his contributions to the nation\u2019s business landscape and development.<\/p>\n

The funeral service is scheduled for 2 PM on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the Roseau Cathedral, with burial to follow at the Anglican Cemetery.<\/p>\n

A National Day of Mourning will be observed on July 29, during which all public buildings\u2019 flags will be flown at half-mast.<\/p>\n
