{"id":345507,"date":"2025-07-28T09:26:17","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T13:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=345507"},"modified":"2025-07-28T09:26:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T13:26:17","slug":"monetary-load-of-ncds-can-be-lightened-by-proactive-wellness-approach-says-president-burton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/homepage-carousel\/monetary-load-of-ncds-can-be-lightened-by-proactive-wellness-approach-says-president-burton\/","title":{"rendered":"Monetary load of NCDs can be lightened by proactive wellness approach, says President Burton"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_345508\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-345508\" style=\"width: 1033px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-345508\" src=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/President-of-Dominica-H.E-Sylvanie-Burton.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1033\" height=\"656\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-345508\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President of Dominica H.E Sylvanie Burton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) continue to pose serious concerns in Dominica, resulting in a heavy fiscal cost.<\/p>\n<p>Her Excellency Sylvanie Burton shared the figures during the presentation of the 2025\/2026 National Budget held on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApproximately 15,048 people were living with diabetes in Dominica in 2024, with an estimated economic burden between USD16.4 million and 27.4 million annually,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Non-Communicable Diseases include cancer, cardiovascular diseases, \u00a0diabetes, \u00a0respiratory diseases, \u00a0hypertension, and obesity, \u00a0most of which are preventable.\u00a0 NCDs are the leading cause of illness, \u00a0disability, and death globally.\u00a0 According to World Health Organization (WHO) these diseases account for 71 % of all deaths annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHypertension-the most prevalent NCD, affecting around 25,992 individuals in 2024, with economic cost between USD 780,000 and 1.14 million annually,\u201d highlighted Burton.<\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cCancer incidence has steadily increased with 112 new cases recorded in 2024 alone. The economic burden for new cancer cases is estimated between USD 112,000 and 896,000 annually. These figures are alarming, especially for a small population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to her, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals set a target to reduce premature deaths from NCDs by one third by 2030, \u00a0SDG 3.4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government of Dominica is committed to this goal and to SDG 3.8, which aims for universal health coverage and access to essential healthcare for all citizens,\u201d Burton stated. \u201cTo effectively combat NCDs, the government recognizes the need to strengthen both prevention and treatment \u00a0across the healthcare system \u00a0while addressing the underlying social and lifestyle factors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To this end, \u00a0the government has enhanced medical facilities, \u00a0improved access to medicines, boosted primary and secondary healthcare services, and scaled up primary healthcare initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, she stated that recognizing the urgent need to act early, \u00a0the government has strengthened national health screenings to detect NCDs sooner and prevent their progression.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of preventing and managing these diseases, Burton encourages physical activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government has initiated several programs aimed at promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary lifestyles,\u201d she noted. \u201cOur Ministry of Health is committed to this fight, but unfortunately, health \u00a0is an individual responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She encourages the public to pay attention to their wellness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what can we do collectively to prevent and manage NCDs? We start by adjusting our lifestyles, building awareness of NCD risks, \u00a0educating our communities, discouraging tobacco use and excessive alcohol intake, promoting physical activity and healthy diets, improving air quality, and encouraging regular screening and timely treatment,\u201d Burton encouraged. \u201c Integrating mandatory fitness programs and health education into the school curriculum with ongoing monitoring will also contribute to long-term health improvements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, she said the integration of digital health tools, \u00a0investment in prevention strategies, and real-time disease surveillance can transform Dominica&#8217;s national health trajectory from reactive to proactive care.
