\u201cThere is no room for corrupt police officers.\u201d Those were the words of \u00a0Former Assistant Superintendent of Police, Claude Weekes while speaking on DBS Radio Discoveries Program recently.<\/p>\n
According to him, systems must be in place to ensure that the police force is not compromised.<\/p>\n
\u201cTelling the public to do X, Y, and Z, or you ought not to do it [what] you are doing, there is no room for corrupt police officers,\u201d he said. \u201cIn any police force, of course, there will be because we are sinful by nature and practice and will always seek to circumvent and do things around.\u201d<\/p>\n
He continued, \u201cThat is critical.\u201d<\/p>\n
Referring to respect from the public, he believes that despite the pressure they give to police officers, the public “[expects] us to be above God.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEven our appearance, some guys, they are in uniform and–my God–we can do better than that,\u201d Weekes remarked.<\/p>\n
He believes that a good policeman should possess qualities such as wisdom, \u201cso we can tie that into decision-making.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou must have the strength and the patience, and that is another important attribute,\u201d Weekes stated. \u201cPatience, understanding, leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n
He continued, \u201cI heard of new high-ranking promotions, leadership that has to be exercised. You carry the rank, but you must be wise, you must be courageous, you have to understand the systems, have a good handle on public administration, know how the system works, read the constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n
