Her Excellency Gabriele M\u00e9on-Tsch\u00fcrtz, Austria\u2019s ambassador to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), officially presented her Letter of Credence to Dr. Didacus Jules, the OECS Director General on on August 18, 2025. The ceremony, held at the headquarters of the OECS Commission in Castries, Saint Lucia, was attended by representatives of various missions and institutions accredited to the OECS, who extended their congratulations to the ambassador on her new appointment.<\/p>\n

During her address, Ambassador M\u00e9on-Tsch\u00fcrtz expressed Austria\u2019s commitment to fostering strong ties with the Caribbean region, shared an OECS release. She noted, \u201c<\/strong>Austria cherishes its relations with the Caribbean and has contributed to programmes also benefitting OECS countries in the framework of SIDS, CARICOM, and the European Union third country cooperation, with a special focus on sustainability, clean energy, and disaster management. Austria is interested in intensifying links with the Caribbean, the OECS being a particularly important partner and stable anchor in this respect.\u201d<\/p>\n

She further outlined several upcoming collaborative initiatives between Austria and the OECS. These include a seminar scheduled for this autumn aimed at young diplomats, organized by the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. Additionally, there are plans to establish a CARICOM office to improve communication and cooperation with Vienna-based United Nations agencies, benefiting OECS member states.<\/p>\n

In response, Dr. Didacus Jules welcomed Ambassador M\u00e9on-Tsch\u00fcrtz, emphasizing the importance of such diplomatic ceremonies. \u201c<\/strong>This ceremony is never a mere formality. It is a renewal of trust, a pledge of friendship, and a confirmation that even in an era of turbulence, nations near and far still choose dialogue over distance. Your engagement embodies a simple truth that multilateral relations must be preserved, not because they are convenient, but because they are indispensable to a safer and more just world,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Dr. Jules highlighted Austria\u2019s ongoing support beyond diplomatic training, emphasizing its contributions to regional efforts in renewable energy and energy efficiency. The OECS indicated that these initiatives align with its goals of reducing energy costs, boosting energy security, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Austria\u2019s involvement has also reportedly been vital in advancing the OECS\u2019s climate change adaptation and disaster resilience strategies.<\/p>\n

Following the formal proceedings, the ambassador engaged in a discussion with senior OECS officials to explore avenues for future collaboration. Topics included expanding diplomatic training programs to cover emerging fields such as cyber and digital policy, the blue economy, governance, and development financing. Discussions also focused on leveraging Austria\u2019s expertise in energy and climate risk management through technology transfer and knowledge sharing.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the meeting explored potential partnerships in agriculture, sustainable tourism, and health sectors, emphasizing training, emergency logistics, and research\u2014especially in areas sensitive to climate impacts.<\/p>\n

It is noteworthy that Austria has maintained official diplomatic relations with the OECS since 2012, reflecting a longstanding commitment to regional partnership and development.<\/p>\n
