The Kalinago Council has secured a generous financial contribution from Seacology, a global nonprofit organization committed to safeguarding island ecosystems and cultural heritage. The council shared that this funding will support the enhancement and preservation of the Lescalier T\u00eate Chien area \u2014 one of the most distinctive and culturally important natural sites within the Kalinago Territory.<\/p>\n
According to the release, the initiative will involve establishing a visitor-friendly reception zone, adding informational signage, developing guided tour programs, and undertaking tree planting projects. In exchange, the Kalinago Council has pledged to protect and manage 65 acres of unspoiled coastal woodland, ensuring the conservation of local biodiversity and traditional customs for generations to come.<\/p>\n
This collaboration follows a recent visit from Seacology\u2019s Executive Director, Duane Silverstein, along with members of the organization\u2019s team, who met with the Kalinago Council to explore avenues for sustainable growth and cultural safeguarding.<\/p>\n
Chief Anette Thomas-Sanford expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support, stating: \u201cThis project represents a meaningful step towards protecting our natural heritage while creating sustainable economic opportunities for the Kalinago people especially the People of Sineku. We thank Seacology for believing in our vision and partnering with the Kalinago\u00a0 Council to safeguard both our land and our culture.\u201d<\/p>\n
Named after a legendary serpent from Kalinago myth, Lescalier T\u00eate Chien is a geological and cultural jewel that attracts visitors from across Dominica and beyond. Through this initiative, the Kalinago Council says it seeks to improve the visitor experience while preserving the site\u2019s ecological health and spiritual importance.<\/p>\n
Seacology\u2019s objectives closely resonate with the Kalinago Council\u2019s dedication to sustainable development and environmental care.<\/p>\n
