Public Relations Officer at the Dominica Electricity Services Ltd (DOMLEC), Ayeola George, has announced that recent outages were a result of unexpected obstacles faced during scheduled upkeep at the organization\u2019s hydroelectric facilities.<\/p>\n
Her comments came during a media statement this week.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese outages were a result of unforeseen challenges encountered during planned maintenance activities at our hydro stations,\u201d she said. \u201cThe PADU Station was taken offline to facilitate repairs to a nearby pipeline that had been damaged by a landslide earlier this year.\u201d<\/p>\n
With transmission works for the upcoming geothermal project already in progress in the area, George noted that this provided an opportune time to complete the pipeline repair and strengthen the system.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, she said the works initially scheduled for Friday through Sunday extended into Monday.<\/p>\n
In addition, George stated that the PADU Station was offline for scheduled annual BusBar maintenance.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs part of the BusBar operations, our Trafalgar Station was also taken offline due to its interconnection with PADU,\u201d George explained.<\/p>\n
She continued, \u201cDuring restoration, issues were discovered with two units at Trafalgar which required immediate attention.\u201d<\/p>\n
George revealed that these were fully resolved by 3:00 PM on Monday, August 25.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, she pointed out that DOMLEC\u2019s generation capacity was significantly reduced, and customers in parts of the north, west, south-west, and east coast of the island experienced prolonged outages.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe recognized that this was an extreme disruption and we are working to ensure that such an occurrence does not repeat,\u201d she emphasized. \u201cDOMLEC extends sincere apologies to all affected customers for the inconvenience caused and deeply appreciates your patience and understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n
