Leaders and officials from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), including Heads of State and Government, the CARICOM Secretary-General, along with regional and international representatives, are scheduled to gather in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on September 7 for the second edition of the Africa-CARICOM Summit.<\/p>\n
According to a CARICOM press release, the summit coincides with the observance of the third CARICOM-Africa Day and is centered around the theme \u201cTranscontinental Partnership in Pursuit of Reparatory Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.\u201d Its organization reflects the commitments outlined in the AU-CARICOM Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which aims to enhance collaboration and strengthen connections between Africa and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n
The event will take place at the headquarters of the African Union Commission and is anticipated to be attended by leaders from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, as well as heads of the African and Caribbean Development Banks, including the Afreximbank.<\/p>\n
CARICOM also reports that additional participants will include representatives from the broader African Union and United Nations systems, along with key regional and global stakeholders such as the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States; the Permanent Forum of People of African Descent; civil society groups; and diaspora organizations.<\/p>\n
On September 6, the African Union Commission will host a high-level side event focusing on reparations, the preservation of memory, and sovereignty. Additionally, Ministers of Health from Africa and the Caribbean will meet jointly, facilitated by Ethiopia\u2019s Ministry of Health, the African Union Commission, CARICOM, and HeDPAC. Caribbean nationals residing in Ethiopia will also organize a diaspora event aimed at bolstering Caribbean-Africa relations.<\/p>\n
The official opening on September 7 will feature addresses from several prominent figures, including the incoming Chair of CARICOM, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew; CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett; Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf; Ethiopian Prime Minister, H.E. Abiy Ahmed Ali; Angolan President, H.E. Jo\u00e3o Manuel Gon\u00e7alves Louren\u00e7o; and UN Secretary-General, H.E. Ant\u00f3nio Guterres.<\/p>\n
Throughout the summit, plenary sessions and open debates will be conducted. The opening ceremony will be accessible via live streams on CARICOM\u2019s social media channels.<\/p>\n
