Two of the West Indies’ own, Candace La Borde and Jacquline Williams, have been selected for the prestigious Emirates ICC Panel of Match Officials for the upcoming ICC Women\u2019s World Cup. Cricket West Indies reports that the tournament is scheduled to be hosted across India and Sri Lanka from September 30 to November 2.<\/p>\n

A statement from CWI describes their appointments as a historic milestone since the event will feature an all-female officiating team comprising 14 umpires and four match referees\u2014an unprecedented move reflecting the ICC\u2019s dedication to promoting, supporting, and empowering women within the sport. Notably, the West Indies is proud to be represented by two of these distinguished officials.<\/p>\n

Williams, hailing from Jamaica, will be participating in her third Women\u2019s World Cup, joining Australian Claire Polosak and England\u2019s Sue Redfern as the most seasoned members of this pioneering panel.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, La Borde, originating from Trinidad and Tobago, reaches a significant career milestone, underscoring her ascent among the region\u2019s most promising umpiring talents.<\/p>\n

In 2022, Williams made history as the first female umpire from the West Indies to officiate a men’s T20I match between two full-member teams. She began her umpiring journey in 2007, and despite years of experience, she expressed that her enthusiasm remains undiminished, \u201cI think being selected for any world event is always a good feeling. This is my third, but I still get the same goosebumps I got when I was selected for the first. It\u2019s the same amount of passion, excitement and enthusiasm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williams also emphasized her motivation to serve as a role model for aspiring female umpires, especially within the Caribbean.\u201cWhenever I step out on the field, my aim is not just to perform for myself, but to remember there\u2019s a possibility that whatever I do will have an impact especially on female umpires coming through, especially from the region. I want to represent well to ensure that I would create a pathway for other females to come through.\u201d<\/p>\n

For La Borde, her appointment signifies an honor to represent Caribbean women in international sports. She expressed pride in being able to follow in the footsteps of trailblazers like Williams, saying,\u201cOur appointments are a good example for women in the region. \u201cJackie\u201d has been carrying the torch for the West Indies for several years, so to be able to follow in her footsteps, is an amazing feeling, proud moment for me and my career.\u201d<\/p>\n

CWI\u2019s Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe, lauded the achievement as an inspiring development for Caribbean cricket.\u201cWe are immensely proud of Candace and Jacquline. Their selections reflect years of dedication, professionalism and passion for the game. To have two West Indian umpires on an all-female panel for a World Cup is a testament to the progress being made in creating opportunities for women in cricket, both on and off the field<\/p>\n

\u201cJacquline has long been a pioneer and role model in officiating, and we are delighted to see Candace following that path. They will inspire the next generation of women across the Caribbean who aspire to serve the game as officials at the highest level,\u201d Bascombe added.<\/p>\n

CWI added that the ICC Women\u2019s World Cup promises to be a premier occasion, showcasing the best talent and officials from around the world. La Borde and Williams are expected to play vital roles in upholding the integrity, fairness, and spirit of cricket during the tournament\u2019s most significant moments.<\/p>\n
