Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has told the 16 families of Eggleston who were presented with keys to their new homes this week that they will receive grant title ownership at the appointed time.<\/p>\n

He made the disclosure during the handing over ceremony of 16 apartment units held at the State House Conference Centre.<\/p>\n

This forms part of the government’s Housing Programme.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to say to you that you will receive your titles for your homes in your name at the appointed time,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause we are giving you these new homes to empower you as citizens of this country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Skerrit continued, \u201cAnd my hope is that one day when you get your title you can go to the bank and credit union and put this title in the credit union and take a loan and to build a small business and to empower yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

He told those who are still waiting that their turn will come.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are closer to receiving today than you were yesterday, because we have 16 families who are no longer on the list,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the Prime Minister pointed out that there will always be people in society notwithstanding their best efforts will still be unable to go to the banks and the credit unions, \u201clike you and me\u201d to get a loan to build their homes.<\/p>\n

\u201c And the question is, if these people are in need, what do we do as a government? Do I say to them that this is not a responsibility of the government? Or we use the little resources that we have to build homes for them so that their children can have hope and confidence in the future of this country, that the children can study under the lights, that their children can have access to modern washrooms, that the senior citizens no longer have to bother themselves with leaking roofs \u00a0and struggling single parents at the mercies of unscrupulous landlords who rent the homes for people with no washrooms, \u00a0no proper facilities,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Parliamentary of Roseau South Constituency, Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite said this is not the end, but part of a new beginning.<\/p>\n

\u201cSixteen families will receive the keys to their modern resilient homes, which will change their lives forever,\u201d she stated. \u201cWe received 515 applications and all of whom are deserving.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said her preoccupation now as Parl Rep is to review the applications, 499 of them, \u201cand to see how best I can assist and better their circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c I am still mindful of the fact that the living conditions of too many people have not reached the acceptable level,\u201d she noted. \u201cOur government knows this.\u00a0 I am aware of this. Your time to join several thousands who are living in resilient homes shall come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lockhart-Hypolite told the recipients that this is a pledge that she and the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) has made, \u201can obligation which we are fulfilling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don’t promise which we cannot deliver. Our records are clear for all to see,\u201d she noted. \u201cThings happen in God’s own time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lockhart-Hypolite added, \u201c To the beneficiaries, you are relieved from your burden of servicing rent. Hence your current savings can lead to the production of disposable income.\u201d<\/p>\n
