The upcoming 12th Annual E.O. LeBlanc Memorial Lecture, organized jointly by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Global Campus Dominica and the Division of Culture, will spotlight discussions centered on the livelihoods of communities across Dominica. The event is scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2025, starting at 7:00 PM, and will be held at the Alwin Bully Auditorium within the UWI campus.<\/p>\n
This year’s panel of experts will delve into various aspects of community sustenance and cultural practices.<\/p>\n
A UWI press release shared that the lineup includes Mrs. Miranda Stephenson, who will explore \u201cToloma: Roots of Sustainability & Community Resilience,\u201d highlighting traditional practices that foster environmental and social stability.<\/p>\nMiranda Stephenson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Mr. Derrick Theophille will present on \u201cAnnou wiv\u00e9 b\u00f2 lanm\u00e8-a: The Fishing Culture of Soufriere & Scottshead,\u201d examining the vital role of fishing communities in local livelihoods.<\/p>\nDerrick Theophille<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Mrs. Gweneth Frederick will discuss \u201cKalinago crafts: Weaving traditional practice and modern business innovations,\u201d emphasizing how Indigenous crafts contribute to both cultural preservation and economic development.<\/p>\nGweneth Frederick<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
The discussion will be moderated by Mr. Micah Walter, the Coordinator for Private Sector Relations, Industry, Commerce, and Innovation at the Ministry of Labour, Public Service Reform, Social Partnership, Entrepreneurship, and Small Business Development.<\/p>\nMicah Walter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
According to Dr. Kimone Joseph, Head of UWI Global Campus Dominica, the theme of this year\u2019s event echoes that of Dominica\u2019s History Week, which is aligned with the nation\u2019s Independence celebrations.<\/p>\n
She explains, \u201cThis year, we will explore how our local communities have historically sustained themselves through a combination of traditional practices and modern innovations that infuse cultural heritage, environmental stewardship, and economic survival to contribute to the resilience of several of Dominica\u2019s communities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
Organizers said that the E.O. LeBlanc Memorial Lecture series is an integral part of the National Independence Calendar, dedicated to commemorating the life and contributions of Edward Oliver LeBlanc, Dominica\u2019s first Premier. Known for his commitment to culture, LeBlanc was an enthusiastic reader and poet, and his legacy is celebrated through these annual discussions focused on cultural themes.<\/p>\n
