 <\/p>\n

On Environmental Protection as a “Central Pillar”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Minister’s claim that environmental protection forms the central pillar of government policy\u00a0rings hollow against the backdrop of current realities. The evidence contradicts this assertion. Our\u00a0rivers are being choked with sediment, our reefs are dying, our watersheds are under attack, our\u00a0forests are being cleared without adequate safeguards, and our marine ecosystems are under\u00a0unprecedented assault.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On Jobs and Economic Opportunity<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Minister fails to address a fundamental truth: sustainable economic opportunity cannot be\u00a0built on the ruins of our natural resource base. The farmers who depend on healthy watersheds,\u00a0the fishermen who rely on thriving marine ecosystems, the tour guides who showcase our pristine\u00a0natural assets\u2014these Dominicans are watching their livelihoods being destroyed in real time by\u00a0poorly managed development projects.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On the Deux Branches Response<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Minister celebrates the Prime Minister’s “swift and decisive” action in pausing the Deux\u00a0Branches project. This mischaracterizes a reactive scramble as responsible governance. Due\u00a0diligence, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory compliance are meant to occur\u00a0before projects begin, not midway through construction after environmentalists and ecologists\u00a0sound the alarm.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On the Mariner Development “Monitoring”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The claim that the government continues to monitor the Mariner development and understands the importance of our dive sites strains credibility. If genuine monitoring were occurring, how did obvious and extensive sedimentation continue unchecked for an extended period? The Minister’s assurance that remediation will be “expedited” to address deficiencies is particularly galling\u2014it amounts to an admission that damage has occurred on her government’s watch, despite their supposed monitoring. This is not oversight; this is negligence followed by damage control.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On Development Strategy and Regulatory Oversight<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Minister points to the international airport and Cabrits Marina as examples of development\u00a0paired with environmental management and strong regulatory oversight. But how so when the\u00a0relevant environmental assessment reports if any<\/i>, have not been released to the public. What\u00a0regulatory oversight exists when citizens cannot review any environmental analysis supposedly\u00a0guiding these massive projects?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pattern of Destruction<\/strong><\/p>\n

What we are witnessing is devastation wrapped in development language. Ecosystems that took\u00a0millennia to evolve are being obliterated by foreign bulldozers in a matter of months, all in the\u00a0name of progress. The physical evidence surrounds us: sediment-laden rivers, damaged reefs,\u00a0cleared forests, disrupted watersheds. These are not abstract environmental concerns; they\u00a0represent the systematic destruction of Dominica’s most valuable and irreplaceable assets.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our Position<\/strong><\/p>\n

The UPP is calling on the government to account for the reckless mismanagement of our land, our\u00a0waters, and our natural heritage. Environmental stewardship cannot be reduced to press releases\u00a0and reactive interventions after public outcry. Dominica’s identity as the Nature Island must be\u00a0more than a marketing slogan. It must be a commitment reflected in every development decision,\u00a0every project approval, every regulatory action. Our natural environment is the foundation of our\u00a0economy, our food security, our water supply, and our future. Once destroyed, it cannot be\u00a0restored by press releases or belated remediation efforts.<\/p>\n

We call on this government to immediately implement transparent environmental review\u00a0processes, release all relevant assessment reports to the public, ensure adequate compensation\u00a0for displaced persons, halt projects that cannot demonstrate environmental compliance, and\u00a0establish genuine regulatory oversight with enforcement capacity.
