Minister for Housing and Urban Development Melissa Poponne-Skerrit has revealed that close to $2 million was allocated to the Salisbury Constituency to assist in housing, she was speaking at the end of year press conference on Monday.<\/p>\n
She was responding to statements made by Parliamentary Representative of the Salisbury Constituency, Jesma Paul-Victor during parliament recently.<\/p>\n
Paul-Victor\u00a0argued that her constituency has not benefited from the government\u2019s housing project.<\/p>\n
She said the government has allocated millions in capital spending to the Ministry of Housing with the intention of constructing new homes,\u00a0\u00a0yet despite the substantial allocation of funds approved by this very parliament none was spent in her constituency.<\/p>\n
According to Victor, 8 years after Hurricane Maria families in the Salisbury Constituency, \u201cthat is Coulibistrie to be exact\u201d, continue to live in deteriorating structures, partially repaired houses and temporary arrangements which were meant to be short-term.<\/p>\n
However, in dismissing that statement, Poponne-Skerrit who was responding to reporters at the recently held press conference \u00a0said the fact that the Salisbury Constituency is an opposition seat doesn\u2019t mean that it has been abandoned.<\/p>\n
\u201cHousing is a right and it is for everyone across Dominica. And we have made significant interventions in terms of financing I believe close to 2 million-[dollars] was allocated to that constituency and it was distributed through the local village council,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Poponne-Skerrit continued, \u201cAs far as I can remember there\u2019s just less than 5 households which we have to facilitate and this will address this in 2026, but quite a bit of interventions have been made throughout this area facilitating \u00a0all those who require assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n
Furthermore, she revealed that a number of these constituents were carded for relocation, but during this time many of them opted for land opportunities which the government has facilitated in selling government land to reduced price,\u201d she explained. \u201cSo a number of them have purchased land from the government and built their own homes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Poponne-Skerrit added, \u201cA few of them moved to different areas, while some migrated and we have facilitated quite a few people financially in building back some of their homes, fixing their current homes.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Minister for Housing and Urban Development Melissa Poponne-Skerrit has revealed that close to $2 million was allocated to the Salisbury Constituency to assist in housing, she was speaking at the end of year press conference on Monday.
