Following the inaugural Plenary Session of the Caribbean\u2013EU Parliamentary Assembly in Antigua and Barbuda from February 16 to 18, Co-President Malik Azmani emphasized the historic significance of this gathering. He noted that it marks the official launch of the parliamentary component of the Samoa Agreement, a milestone in strengthening relations between the two regions, shared a media release.<\/p>\n
This initial plenary session reportedly demonstrated a collective political desire to deepen dialogue and foster stronger collaboration among like-minded partners. These allies are bound by longstanding historical connections, shared core values, and a mutual dedication to democracy, multilateralism, and adherence to international law.<\/p>\n
According to the release, the meeting was held amid a complex global environment and faced numerous challenges, including escalating geopolitical tensions, mounting pressures on the international rules-based order, and widespread crises impacting societies, economies, and security worldwide. In such a context, the importance of cooperation between the European Union and Caribbean nations has never been more critical, asserts the EU.<\/p>\n
Throughout the three days, the release shares that parliamentarians from Europe and the Caribbean engaged in meaningful and forward-looking debates centered around five key strategic areas: climate resilience and the transition to clean energy; trade and investment opportunities; combatting transnational organized crime; safeguarding territorial integrity and promoting multilateralism; and addressing the ongoing situation in Haiti. The participants expressed concern over Haiti\u2019s dire circumstances, reaffirming their strong support for a Haitian-led political process, while also highlighting the urgent need to address insecurity and alleviate the mounting humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n
Reportedly, a consensus emerged on the necessity of developing, under the auspices of the Global Gateway initiative, a Caribbean\u2013EU Climate Resilience and Renewable Energy Compact. Additionally, discussions focused on establishing a coordinated approach to managing Sargassum seaweed blooms, including increased funding for research into alternative uses. Other topics included expanding trade prospects, improving market access, fostering cooperation in the digital economy and investments, and enhancing trade regulation capabilities.<\/p>\n
As per the release, the assembly was further enriched by an engaging and participatory Youth Forum, which highlighted the vital role that young people play in climate resilience efforts. The forum stressed the importance of developing green skills among youth to ensure sustainable progress.<\/p>\n
The Women\u2019s Forum contributed valuable insights on women\u2019s economic empowerment, emphasizing better access to finance and reaffirming women\u2019s crucial role in shaping the future of Caribbean\u2013EU relations.<\/p>\n
In conclusion, the Assembly adopted a series of tangible recommendations directed at the Caribbean\u2013EU Council of Ministers. These directives are intended to serve as a roadmap for future joint initiatives. Co-President Azmani reaffirmed that the European Parliament delegation, having participated in the Antigua and Barbuda meeting, is more convinced than ever that ongoing engagement and strengthened political dialogue are vital for advancing shared prosperity and defending a multilateral, rules-based international order.<\/p>\n
