The African Union has once again taken a firm stand against the United States’ longstanding embargo on Cuba, approving a resolution for the seventeenth consecutive time that condemns the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on the Caribbean nation.<\/p>\n
The resolution acknowledges that the “policy that for more than six decades has profoundly affected the Cuban people and hindered their development,” said a media release from the Cuban Embassy in Ethiopia.<\/p>\n
It explained that the adopted document highlights, for the third time, Africa\u2019s explicit appeal to remove Cuba from the list of countries accused of sponsoring terrorism\u2014a list that many view as unjustified and arbitrary.<\/p>\n
Additionally, the resolution underscores the political and moral obligation to reconsider such designation, which has been used as a tool to justify the ongoing embargo, stated the embassy.<\/p>\n
According to the release, African leaders voiced particular concern over the escalating adverse effects of the blockade, especially amid the current global challenges intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. They condemned the extraterritorial reach of U.S. sanctions, notably the enforcement of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, which extends the restrictions beyond U.S. borders and hampers Cuba\u2019s ability to engage in international trade and finance.<\/p>\n
“African leaders also expressed concern about the worsening negative effects of the blockade, especially in the current context, when Cuba still faces significant economic and social challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. They also denounced the extraterritorial reach of this policy, including the application of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, which reinforces restrictions and extends their consequences beyond U.S. borders.<\/p>\n
