The Medical Profession Bill 2026, which proposes the creation of the Dominica Medical Council, was passed in Parliament this week. This body will oversee the registration and licensing of medical practitioners, regulate professional conduct and disciplinary matters, and establish standards for qualifications and ongoing education.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis Bill establishes the Dominica Medical Council, a modern, independent regulatory body responsible for overseeing registration, licensing, professional standards and disciplinary processes,\u201d Health Minister Cassanni Laville said while delivering remarks in Parliament.<\/p>\n

According to him, this council will replace the existing medical board with one that reflects modern healthcare realities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe council will ensure proper licensing of practitioners, oversight of professional conduct, clear disciplinary mechanisms and regulation and maintenance of high standards across the profession,\u201d Laville stated.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that, importantly, the council will include defined governance, including a registrar, an auditor, and committees dedicated to education, training, and disciplinary oversight.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis ensures institutional strength, integrity, and independence,\u201d Laville noted. \u201cThis protects patients, it protects professionals, and it protects the integrity of the healthcare system.\u201d<\/p>\n
