“Agricultural advocacy and development organization”, AgriHub, is urging greater efficiency and responsiveness within Dominica’s agricultural sector after challenges encountered during the implementation of its SheHarvest Project revealed delays that can hinder women seeking to establish themselves in farming.<\/p>\n

The initiative, funded by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), was developed to provide practical support to women entering agriculture through services such as land preparation assistance, business development guidance and the introduction of climate-smart farming techniques. Central to the project is the goal of helping women transition from small-scale or subsistence farming into commercially focused agricultural enterprises, said an AgriHub press release.<\/p>\n

According to AgriHub, while the project generated significant interest among women eager to participate in the agricultural sector, implementation exposed operational challenges that continue to affect productivity, planning, and overall progress at the farm level.<\/p>\n

Executive Director of AgriHub, Abigail Shillingford, said the experience highlighted a disconnect between the country’s agricultural aspirations and the systems designed to support those ambitions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is clear ambition for agriculture in Dominica,\u201d said Abigail Shillingford, Executive Director of AgriHub. \u201cThe question is whether operational systems on the ground in Dominica are moving at the same pace as that ambition. If we want more women and young people participating in agriculture, then the systems supporting them must become more responsive, practical, and execution-focused.\u201d<\/p>\n

AgriHub reported that it took more than 12 weeks for land preparation support to move from the planning stage to implementation. The organization noted that such delays can have a direct impact on planting schedules, crop production, farmers’ confidence, and their ability to generate income.<\/p>\n

Shillingford explained that a significant part of AgriHub’s involvement throughout the project involved helping participants navigate administrative and operational bottlenecks to ensure they remained engaged in the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs an organization, we have had to consistently coordinate, follow up, and push processes forward so that participants remain motivated and able to continue,\u201d she stressed. \u201cWithout that level of intervention, many women could easily become discouraged before production even begins.\u201d<\/p>\n

The release added that through support provided by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, the project was able to address some of the barriers affecting production readiness. Among the measures implemented was facilitating access to mechanised land preparation through the use of a tiller, helping farmers prepare their plots more efficiently.<\/p>\n

Counsellor at the High Commission of Canada in Bridgetown, Stephanie Sprott, highlighted the value of the initiative and its contribution to women’s participation in agriculture.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased to support AgriHub\u2019s work to help women farmers enter the agricultural system, as well as succeeding within it and sustaining their enterprises. They have gained access to practical tools and equipment, business and financial management training, hands-on demonstrations, and stronger linkages with financial and agricultural stakeholders.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada is proud to support regional partners in strengthening food security, building resilience in local food systems, and expanding sustainable economic opportunities for farmers.\u201d<\/p>\n

In its release, AgriHub emphasized that building a stronger agricultural sector requires more than strategic planning and policy discussions. The organization argued that equal attention must be given to improving implementation timelines, coordination among stakeholders, and the practical systems that directly affect farmers’ ability to produce and succeed.<\/p>\n
