All views and claims expressed in this article are solely those of the author.<\/em><\/p>\nOn Saturday, June 6, 2026, the appreciative audience of predominantly senior citizens and some youth, at the St. Gerard’s Hall was treated with an exceptional performance of Pan music by students of the Convent High School Steel Pan Group, Pan in Harmony junior and senior bands.<\/p>\n
The occasion was the annual Pan in Harmony concert dubbed \u201cIcons on Steel,\u201d a fundraiser for the Dominica Cancer Society.<\/p>\n
The two-part concert was in four segments, which opened and closed with the senior Pan in Harmony band and was complemented by the Convent High School Steel Pan Group to close the first half, and the junior Pan in Harmony band opened the second half after a brief intermission.<\/p>\n
The evening began with an introductory presentation by students of the Convent Prep and was graced with the presence of Her Excellency President Sylvanie Burton and Mr. Burton. After the formalities of the national anthem, prayer, and opening remarks by Jacqueline Andre, manager of Pan in Harmony, the master of ceremonies, Charlan Commodore, efficiently managed the flow of the performances flawlessly.<\/p>\n
The senior and junior Pan in Harmony bands delivered a repertoire of musical pieces which started on a religious note with How Great Thou Art, followed by Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song”, John Legend\u2019s \u201cAll of Me\u201d, and Elvis Presley\u2019s \u201cCan\u2019t Help Falling in Love\u201d, among other hits like “Lean on Me”, “When”, “Harder They Come”, by Bill Withers, Nasio Fontaine and Jimmy Cliff respectively. The evening was intended to end with a medley of Lord Kitchener, but the performers could not resist the anchor of the audience, which demanded a repeat of Mighty Gabby’s “Doctor Cassandra” that previously had the audience rocking in the cold metal chairs.<\/p>\n
Without any attempt to diminish the excellence of the Pan in Harmony bands, which gave a stunning performance, the Convent High School girls stole the night. It is unbelievable that this was their first public performance, and they have been together for a mere seven months. The girls delivered a repertoire of “The Blue Danube Waltz” by Johann Strauss II, “Sound of Silence” by Paul Simon, and “Heart and Soul” by Hoagy Carmichael flawlessly and with a high level of professionalism, which deserved a standing ovation.<\/p>\n
All the performances deserved a standing ovation, but for some reason, the audience did not get on their feet to show appreciation for an exceptional performance. I did take the lead in joining Athie Martin, who was upfront dancing to the rhythm of “Doctor Cassandra” as the imaginary curtains came down on an evening that must be remembered as one of the best for Pan music in the Commonwealth of Dominica. The students of the Convent High School and the senior and junior Pan in Harmony bands delivered!<\/p>\n
I should [end] this review on all these positive notes, but it would be unfair to all those involved in executing such an exceptional production without commenting on the realities of the performing arts in the Commonwealth of Dominica.<\/p>\n
Visibly absent from the audience were the politicians from all sides of the political spectrum, the state agencies associated with the arts and culture, the news media, with the exception of Dominica News Online, and many other stakeholders who can influence the development of the performing arts.<\/p>\n
Thanks to the authorities of St. Gerard’s Hall for making the venue available, but the conditions were far superior in the 1970s when the People’s Action Theatre rolled out its productions. It is unfortunate that in 2026, young performers are subjected to such substandard conditions while the Arawak House of Culture languishes, since Hurricane Maria.<\/p>\n
The Dominica Festival Commission (DFC) and Discover Dominica Authority must be informed of the exceptional performance that Pan in Harmony delivered in Icons on Steel concert on Saturday, June 6, 2026. Pan in Harmony deserves a place in the lineup of the 2026 World Creole Music Festival, not on the sidelines of fringe events, but at prime time.<\/p>\n
The DFC must engage in the nurturing of new local talent, added to its responsibility of scouting around the world for the most appropriate line-up of international stars. There is no doubt that thirty minutes of amplified top-quality pan music, as displayed by Pan in Harmony, will blow a WCMF audience while they await their favourite stars on any given night of the pulsating music.<\/p>\n
The CHS Steel Pan Group has taught the education authorities the way forward for the introduction of Pan music in the schools.<\/p>\n
I waited to see whether the media would consider the event newsworthy, but that does not seem to be the case. This suggests that the performing arts receive limited attention in our society unless an international artist is brought in at great expense and given extensive publicity and special treatment.<\/p>\n
With an apparent lack of interest in Pan music, poetry, theatre, and other genres of music that [are] not Bouyon, there is hope in the talent displayed on Saturday evening, and Jacqui Andre and her team deserve all the compliments and support for a job well done.<\/p>\n
