Roseau, July 22nd, 2011 – The Waitukubuli Ecological Foundation (WEF) in collaboration with the Citizen\u2019s Forum announces a trio of special emancipation events to mark Emancipation Day \u2013 Monday August 1st, 2011 under the theme NEVER AGAIN SLAVERY.<\/p>\n
The first of the three events \u2013 the National Emancipation Hike – will follow the route of Jacko\u2019s Flat, where the National Emancipation Hikes began in 2000.<\/p>\n
The National Emancipation Hike will honour and pay homage to the brave freedom fighters during the long period of slavery whose intrepid valour helped put an end to the scourge of slavery and established a great legacy of the struggle for the freedom of our people. Associated with this struggle are the names of Jacko, Bala, Congor\u00e9e, among others – our ancestors who, by our tribute on that day, we will crown with glory.<\/p>\n
Jacko was probably the most famous of these Maroons and so this year we will pay special tribute to him and all the countless Africans who made the continuation of slavery impossible in the Americas.<\/p>\n

Event number two is the Emancipation Relay Run through which athletes symbolizing the strength, vitality and endurance of our young nation will carry the Emancipation Torch from Jacko Flats, where the two rivers meet, to an assembly of patriots at Hillsborough united around the cause of emancipating today\u2019s Dominica from the growing threats of mental and economic slavery<\/p>\n
