What remains of the Mattieu Dam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Residents of Layou are being advised to exercise extreme caution when traversing in the Layou River area.<\/p>\n

Based on reports from office of disaster management, there stills seems to be a high level of saturation in the soil, weeks after the breach in the Mattieu Dam.<\/p>\n

Honourable Parliamentary representative of the St. Joseph Constituency, Kelver Darroux, made the disclosure during an exclusive interview with GIS news.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fear is that there may be future landslides but we are hoping that does not occur. However, in the meantime, a cabinet subcommittee has been set up to really address the matter head on and we received several reports from the Office of Disaster Preparedness, from the Ministry of Tourism, the office of Environmental Health as well as the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Public Works. Based on the reports that we have received we are looking as to what best plans can be implemented to address situation as it currently exists,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

However, in the meantime a cabinet subcommittee has been established to address the issue. Honourable Darroux said that government remains committed to addressing the situation.<\/p>\n

He said that there is also a need for the dredging of the river, which government is currently looking into.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have received several applications already from persons and companies who are interested in this and the Government will take its time to really look at it carefully and see how best we can move forward with the process. So the Ministry of Planning and\u00a0 the Ministry of Public Works are engaged in discussions with the various stake holders to see how best and how quickly we can get the sand out of the river so that we can avoid any future disaster in the area,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Residents of Layou are being advised to exercise extreme caution when traversing in the Layou River area.
