Behanzin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A former magistrate said he is giving the government a 24-hour ultimatum to explain allegations of a spy operation in Dominica.<\/p>\n

While he was not clear as to what decision he will take after the 24 hour expires, former Magistrate Tiyani Behanzin has given Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and the Commissioner of Police the time frame to explain to the nation about the alleged operation of the spy agency at the financial center.<\/p>\n

Behanzin said he has credible information that police officers have been deployed to investigate private citizens.<\/p>\n

According to him, if the alleged unit is in place, there are several issues which must be clarified.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell us in the next 24 hours whether or not there is such a unit in operation on the floor or wherever they may be. Whether they are engaged in wire tapping, listening to people\u2019s phone calls and intercepting text messages,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Behanzin said if this unit exists, the authorities need to explain \u201cunder what legal framework does it exist? who authorized its establishments? How long has it been operating? What resources have been allocated to it? By what authority has the resources been allocated and where is the budget for the unit\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said the police chief should explain to the nation \u201cvia a press conference\u201d, and explain who authorized the establishment of the police unit and how could the force justify the deployment of six police officers to \u201cthis useless activity\u201d.<\/p>\n

Reports surfaced recently that the alleged spy network has been discretely snooping on the activities and actions of several Dominicans over the last few months.
