Boyd-Knights<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Chair of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians, Alix Boyd-Knights, has drawn attention to marital rape on the observance of International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women today.<\/p>\n

She has expressed concern that many Commonwealth countries do not demand that a husband be charged for raping his wife.<\/p>\n

In a statement Boyd-Knights said, \u201cI wonder how many persons have considered that countries where no legislation exists to allow a husband to be charged for rape, such countries may be actually condoning domestic violence, state-supported domestic violence as it were.\u201d<\/p>\n

The United Nations\u2019 International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women has been observed since 2000, to allow governments and organisations globally, to raise public awareness of violence against women.<\/p>\n

Boyd-Knights, who is Speaker of the House of Assembly here, believes Parliamentarians have a major task in eradicating violence against women.<\/p>\n

\u201cRaising public awareness is not enough,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
