The country\u2019s Integrity Commission has served notice to public officers, parliamentarians and others who fall under that body\u2019s scope that they have just over two months to make the annual financial disclosure to the Commission.<\/p>\n

The Integrity in Public Office Commission, as it is officially known, has in a release reminded those concerned that\u00a0 \u201call persons in public office are required to file their financial disclosure no later than March 31\u201d.<\/p>\n

It says\u00a0 “persons in public life:- including all members of the House of Assembly, Ministers of Government, Chairmen and Managers of public institutions and Permanent Secretaries and other senior public officers – must file their declarations for the income year ended December 31, 2011 no later than March 31, 2012\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to the commission, Section 22 of the Act concerned provides that failure to file with the Commission as prescribed shall be noted in the Official Gazette, and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.<\/p>\n

It cites the Integrity in Public Office Act, 2003, of the Laws of the Commonwealth of Dominica which states that \u201ca person holding any office or position set out in Part I of the First Schedule to [the] Act\u2026\u201d or \u201cpersons acting continuously for a period of not less than six months in any office set out in Part II of the First Schedule to [the] Act\u2026 shall file a declaration with the Commission setting out:-\u00a0 (a)his office or offices; (b) his income, assets and liabilities; (c)the assets of his wife, children or relative acquired through or traceable to his income; and (d) gifts made by him in value exceeding one thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Integrity act and commission were introduced as part of efforts to give effect to transparency in government.<\/p>\n

Former Cabinet Secretary Julian Johnson when he took up the post of Chairman of the Commission in 2008, explained that the \u201cParliament of Dominica by enacting the Integrity in Public Office Act 2003, deemed it necessary to subject a class of persons (all state functionaries) to a special regime of disclosure of their financial affairs and to a detailed Code of Conduct. This was done for the express purpose of establishing probity, integrity and accountability in public life in the Commonwealth of Dominica\u201d.<\/p>\n
