No parl rep is bigger than the party, no parl rep is guaranteed automatic endorsement as a candidate in the next general election,\u201d PM Skerrit said in his capacity as political leader of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP).<\/p>\n<p>He was at the time addressing the party\u2019s delegates\u2019 conference in the West Coast village of St Joseph on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI intend to declare all constituencies vacant, and persons will have to make a case as to why they should be returned as a candidate for this Dominica Labour Party\u201d the prime minister said to loud applause.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that those who can\u2019t or do not make a satisfactory case \u201cfor retention will be replaced as candidates\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Wilshire says that statement suggests that the prime minister regards selection as \u201ca matter for him\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis man is becoming a dictator, he is getting too big for his boots.\u00a0 Dominicans must cut him down to size otherwise he will destroy them,\u201d Wilshire said.<\/p>\n<p>The Skerrit statement drew applause from supporters at the conference.<\/p>\n<p>Wilshire has described that as worrying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat has happened to the brains of the Labour Party, what has happened to them?\u201d he queried.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wiltshire \u201cthis man will destroy this country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether party leader Skerrit shouldn\u2019t be given the benefit of the doubt, that he possibly intends undertaking the process of assessing\u00a0 parliamentary representatives through a democratic process, Wiltshire was adamant that the party leader\u2019s comment sounded dictatorial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said I Roosevelt Skerrit \u2013 this is a Ghaddafi, Chavez, you know, this is what we are seeing actually happening in Dominica.\u00a0 Dominicans must be very careful,\u201d Wiltshire, who is no longer a member of the DLP, told DNO.<\/p>\n<p>He has called on Dominicans \u201cto be vigilant\u201d in the wake of the prime minister\u2019s \u201cparl rep\u201d statement.<\/p>\n<p>The statement was preceded by the prime minister\u2019s advice to the delegates\u2019 conference that the DLP needs to \u201clay the foundation today for another 25 years in office based on our transformation and adaptability as a 21st century political party\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not taking anything for granted as it relates to the right of the electorate of this country to judge us harshly and on merit, next time around,\u201d PM Skerrit said while making reference to the demise of some other ruling parties in the region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A former attorney general who served in the Labour administration has labeled Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit a dictator, over his announcement about the selection of parliamentary representatives for the next general election. \u201cI always thought that selection of candidates was&#8230;","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":40604,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_cbd_carousel_blocks":"[]","footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-64231","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
