{"id":66668,"date":"2012-06-22T13:27:55","date_gmt":"2012-06-22T17:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=66668"},"modified":"2012-06-22T17:49:42","modified_gmt":"2012-06-22T21:49:42","slug":"cash-injection-in-liat-will-secure-dominicas-investment-in-tourism-skerrit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/news\/business\/cash-injection-in-liat-will-secure-dominicas-investment-in-tourism-skerrit\/","title":{"rendered":"Cash injection in LIAT will secure Dominica&#8217;s investment in tourism &#8211; Skerrit"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_66669\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66669\" style=\"width: 274px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-66669\" title=\"PENTAX DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pm3-300x293.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pm3-300x293.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pm3-150x146.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/pm3.jpg 462w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66669\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PM Skerrit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The initial half of an $8 million cash injection from Dominica to troubled regional airline LIAT is expected to be made within a matter of days, according to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.<\/p>\n<p>He told DNO on Friday that the Dominica Government was holding\u00a0 talks with LIAT on the matter, and that it intended going ahead with the first $4 million dollar investment that would result in Dominica becoming an equity shareholder of the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to discuss with LIAT, we are not going to dive into this thing without knowing what is below the ocean, so we are in discussions with LIAT about this, and once we finalise our discussions with them the monies will be transferred to them,\u201d Prime Minister Skerrit told DNO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important that Dominica play a part to protect Dominica\u2019s interest and to also secure our investment in tourism,\u201d the prime minister said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf LIAT were to stop flying, one can appreciate the tremendous untold difficulties which would be brought on to Dominica,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In response to criticism of the move PM Skerrit said \u201cWe are not unmindful of LIAT\u2019s financial problems and present financial predicament\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However he pointed out that there appeared to be no private sector people willing to invest in LIAT, and Dominica had to act despite suggestions that it was investing in a company that is failing.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister argues that some companies \u201cwhich play a more important role than the bottom line\u201d have to be supported.<\/p>\n<p>He made reference locally to water company DOWASCO and the main Princess Margaret Hospital as essential services which had to be subsidized, and said his government sees LIAT in that same vein.<\/p>\n<p>To critics who say the $8 million promised LIAT could be better utilized locally, PM Skerrit responds that their suggestion that he is neglecting the country in favor of a regional entity misses the point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am protecting Dominica, because without LIAT the hotels cannot be filled, the taxi operators cannot be used, we cannot get departure tax, we cannot get the increase in our revenue, and people cannot come to do business\u2019\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to spend money in other areas, and of course we could have used the money for a number of other areas,\u201d the prime minister acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>However he is not backing down on what he considers the important move of Dominica becoming an equity shareholder of LIAT in the interest of ensuring the island\u2019s air travel needs are met.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The initial half of an $8 million cash injection from Dominica to troubled regional airline LIAT is expected to be made within a matter of days, according to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
