Garraway Hotel\u2019s Judith Pestaina is giving\u00a0 qualified support to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit\u2019s decision to\u00a0 invest $8 million dollars into regional airline LIAT.<\/p>\n

However Pestaina, the leader of the Dominica Freedom, has called for transparency and proper accountability on that matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the decision to invest in LIAT is supported in principle since it is without doubt that LIAT is an economic lifeline for all of us in the region, particularly in the OECS\u2015 the process should be transparent, since any investment made by government is the concern of all Dominicans, the current generation and the next, as they are the ones who will have to face the consequences,\u201d Pestaina said in a release.<\/p>\n

She wants government \u201cto assure us that it is prudently managing taxpayers\u2019 money\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to hotelier and DFP leader, the government\u2019s record on the proper management of public funds \u201cleaves much to be desired\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, the government must inform us of the specific benefits in investing 8 million dollars in LIAT,\u201d Pestaina said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill it mean more frequent access into Dominica and more stayover visitors for Dominica? Will it mean more jobs for Dominicans? What does the decision mean for those who were recently laid off when LIAT\u2019s central office in Roseau was closed,\u201d she queried.<\/p>\n

Her list of questions also include whether Dominica will have more influence in decisions concerning LIAT.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill it mean that we can expect a more efficiently run airline?\u00a0 The government is obliged to tell us the people whether it has done an analysis of the potential risks and, if so, what are those risks and how does it intend to manage them.\u00a0 We need to know the source of the $8 million\u201d Pestaina said in her statement.<\/p>\n

The official parliamentary opposition \u2013 the United Workers Party, has already raised similar concerns.<\/p>\n
