Police Commissioner Cyril Carrette<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Police Commissioner Cyril Carrette is apparently officially on his way out.<\/p>\n

Friday (July 6, 2012) is expected to be the final day on the job for the police chief, who is reported to be going on pre-retirement leave.<\/p>\n

There is to date however, no official word on who is likely to replace him.<\/p>\n

Hobbes Jno Baptiste is the deputy chief of police, but at this stage it is not clear whether he is in the running for the top position.<\/p>\n

The Dominica Government less than five years ago appointed Carrette as police commissioner, a decision that drew sharp criticism from the opposition and sectors of the public who viewed the appointment as \u201cpolitical.\u201d<\/p>\n

Commissioner Carrette has held various positions in the Police Service including carrying out prosecution duties, as well as managing and supervising Police out Stations and officers.<\/p>\n

He is also a former police public relations officer.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit is reported to be out of state attending the CARICOM heads of government summit in St. Lucia and could not be reached for comment on the matter.<\/p>\n

Opposition leader Hector John when contacted told DNO, \u201cI have not yet been contacted or consulted as per the requirements of the Dominica constitution\u201d in relation to Carrette\u2019s successor.<\/p>\n

Unconfirmed reports have been suggesting that Carette was to be given a two (2) year contract to stay on the job.<\/p>\n

The police chief declined to comment on that when asked about it recently, and there has been no official word on that.<\/p>\n

A top police source would only tell DNO \u201cAll I can say on the matter is that the police force must have a leader and come July 6, 2012 when Mr. Carette demits office we will have someone holding the fort until an appointment is made\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Police Commissioner Cyril Carrette is apparently officially on his way out.
