Dominica\u2019s Indigenous people have been advised to consolidate the gains made in the Carib Territory since attaining ownership of the lands there over a century ago.<\/p>\n

That was emphasized on Wednesday (July 04 2012) as the Kalinago\u2019s Indigenous Nation Developers (K.I.N.D) organized a special torch relay activity in recognition of the 109 years since the establishment of the Carib Territory.<\/p>\n

The island\u2019s indigenous Indians were reminded by Gregory Rabess, Senior Cultural Officer, that\u00a0 they the Kalinago people had evolved over the years and achieved a significant level of progress.<\/p>\n

He singled out efforts made to preserve the Kalinago history through the formation of several cultural groups.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will remember the work of the Karifuna cultural group, their appearances in DOMFESTA and all over Dominica. This brought about a new sense of respect and pride for the Kalinago people not just in Dominica but across the region\u201d.<\/p>\n

Rabess says Dominicans now look at the Kalinago people with a new set of eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe use to sort of look down on the Kalinago people. There was the perception that the Kalinago people didn\u2019t have anything important to bring to our civilization – that was the thinking, but this is no more\u201d.<\/p>\n

Rabess is advocating that the Kalinago people look back on their achievements as a native people and strive to excel further.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have come a long way, we have made some significant gains; we have done many things, and let us not take them for granted. What we need to do now is to take it to the next level, mobilizing young people using the latest communications technologies to assist with the documentation process and to create new Kalinago products\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Kalinago Barana Aute is one example of the Kalinago products now operating in the Territory.<\/p>\n
