{"id":67698,"date":"2012-07-05T20:14:50","date_gmt":"2012-07-06T00:14:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=67698"},"modified":"2012-07-05T20:14:50","modified_gmt":"2012-07-06T00:14:50","slug":"man-fined-for-cannabis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/news\/crime-court-law\/man-fined-for-cannabis\/","title":{"rendered":"Man fined for cannabis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-52101\" title=\"court\" src=\"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/court.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/court.jpg 259w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/court-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/>Cornelius Joseph of Boetica was slapped with an EC$600.00 fine after he pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph appeared before chief magistrate Evelina Baptiste after he was arrested on June 16, 2012 by police in that community.<\/p>\n<p>According to police prosecution Inspector Claude Weekes, the police were summoned to the village after a report was made to them against Joseph who has a history of mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph was met by the police on the main road but ran, prompting the police to give chase until he was apprehended.<\/p>\n<p>A search of his person revealed the illegal substance in a clear plastic bag.<\/p>\n<p>Asked to account for it he told the police, \u201cofficer just a little thing I have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Joseph appeared in court a few weeks ago he was sent to the APU for treatment and the report today stated that he was \u201cfit and proper to plead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before sentencing, Joseph in his own mitigation told the court, \u201cI am sorry for my actions and behaviour, I am not a bad person, I had the drugs saw them and started to run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Magistrate Baptiste told him that she liked his \u201cfrankness and honesty\u201d with the court.<\/p>\n<p>She advised him to stay away from drugs and substance abuse and fined him EC600.00 to be paid by January 31, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>He faces three months in jail if he doesn\u2019t pay up on time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Cornelius Joseph of Boetica was slapped with an EC$600.00 fine after he pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis.
