Felix Henderson receives award from Acting President<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

At a ceremony held Wednesday night to bestow Golden Drum awards on four more Dominicans, Chief Cultural Officer, Raymond Lawrence, sounded the call for citizens of the country to use the celebration of emancipation “to re-energize our commitment to promote the positive aspects of our culture and to renew our commitment to helping to build Dominica”.<\/p>\n

Lawrence told those attending the Golden Drum awards ceremony at the Arawak House of Culture “all of us individuals and groups need to see how we can make a difference in our communities and we can do that by identifying a need in our communities…and as long as we can do something about the need then we should try to do it.”<\/p>\n

It was the Chief Cultural Officer’s view that the individuals and groups receiving awards were examples of that type of behaviour.<\/p>\n

“They have been able to make a difference in their communities and in Dominica and tonight they are being recognized for the significant roles they have played in the development of arts and culture in their particular field of endeavour,” Lawrence declared.<\/p>\n

The Golden Drum awardees were DBS Radio for the preservation of Dominica’s music and cultural heritage, the Capuchin Cultural Group for preservation and promotion of the traditional dance and music, Freddie Nicholas for his working in the area of promoting popular music and Felix Henderson for his work in preserving and promoting the kweyol language.<\/p>\n

Recognition awards went to Alex Bruno for the development and promotion of theatre, Flamboyant Dancers for preservation and promotion of traditional and music and Genesis Steel Orchestra for development and promotion of steel band.<\/p>\n

The award presentations were punctuated by performances from a number of groups including \u00a0Genesis Steel Orchestra, Flamboyant Dancers, Sixth Form Sisserou Singers, Ti Bwa, Tradibelle and winner of the 2012, Domfesta Song Contest, Henry Ettienne.<\/p>\n
