Justice Janice M Pereira<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Justice Janice Mesadis Pereira has been appointed to act as Chief Justice and President of the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal with effect from August 1, 2012.<\/p>\n

Dominica News Online first reported over a month ago, that the jurist who is from \u00a0the British Virgin Islands, had been identified to replace Nevision-born Sir Hugh Rawlings who demitted office officially on July 31, 2012, as the new chief justice of the OECS Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

Justice Pereira’s appointment, which was approved by the OECS Authority at its 55th Meeting of OECS leaders in St. Vincent and the Grenadines last week,\u00a0makes her the\u00a0first woman to ever to hold that position.<\/p>\n

Justice Pereira obtained her law degree with honours from the University of the West Indies in 1979 and the Legal Education Certificate from the Norman Manley Law School in 1981.<\/p>\n

She was called to the Bar in the British Virgin Islands in 1981 and again in St Kitts and Nevis in 2000.<\/p>\n

Between 1981 and 1984, Justice Pereira served in various capacities in the legal system including Ag. Magistrate and\u00a0Registrar of Companies in the BVI,\u00a0\u00a0Acting Registrar General and \u00a0Acting Registrar of the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

She served as a High Court Judge from 2003 to 2008 and\u00a0was elevated to the position of Justice of Appeal on 9th January 2009.<\/p>\n
