Political leader of the Opposition United Workers Party (UWP) Edison James, has called on Dominicans and supporters of his party to \u201ccome out in defense of the Dominica Constitution which he says is being violated by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.<\/p>\n

At a public meeting of his party held in the capital city Roseau on Monday evening to discuss the controversy surrounding the reported resignation of president Nicholas Liverpool, James told the vocal crowd that they must be true to the Constitution of Dominica since it is \u201cthe people\u2019s Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEnough is enough … in 1979 the people armed with the Constitution did what they had to do to protect the Constitution and I say in 2012, the same applies so we expect the same action,\u201d James said.<\/p>\n

He called on the people to stop the Prime Minister from \u201cviolating the constitution.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s not my fight … it is for you, the youths, young children, we have no crisis so why the rush?\u201d James questioned.<\/p>\n

He called on government’s nominee for the post of President, Eluid Williams, to use his better judgment in the matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Williams you must know that what is going on there is unconstitutional … they have 18 we have 3, so have no fear, when the process is done properly it will be smooth sailing for you. We are urging you to say to Mr. Skerrit that this system is flawed and you will not take part in this system until it is fixed. Speak to him as a father to a son,\u201d James stated.<\/p>\n

James went on to state that since the process for the election of a president had been flouted, the UWP had not nominated anyone for the post. \u201cWe will not take part in that wrong process but I suggest that on the day that Parliament is meeting we the people should all come out and assemble in a peaceful manner outside the parliament,\u201d James stated.<\/p>\n

In separate letters \u00a0to President Nicholas Liverpool and Speaker of the House Alix Boyd-Knights,\u00a0Opposition leader Hector John has expressed\u00a0the opposition United Workers Party’s \u00a0strong disapproval of a process which led to a special sitting of Parliament on August 24 where members were notified that the office of the President was to become vacant.<\/p>\n

John’s letter to Boyd-Knights described the sitting as an attempt to use the Office of the Speaker of the House \u201cto deviate from the clear and unambiguous prescription of the constitution regarding the termination of the tenure of the current president and the election of a successor.\u201d<\/p>\n
