{"id":73268,"date":"2012-09-11T11:34:13","date_gmt":"2012-09-11T15:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=73268"},"modified":"2012-09-11T11:35:01","modified_gmt":"2012-09-11T15:35:01","slug":"health-care-practitioners-get-training-in-diabetic-foot-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/news\/health\/health-care-practitioners-get-training-in-diabetic-foot-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Health care practitioners get training in diabetic foot care"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_41653\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41653\" style=\"width: 247px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-41653\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/diabetic-training-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"247\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/diabetic-training-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/diabetic-training-1024x764.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/diabetic-training-150x111.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/diabetic-training.jpg 1046w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 247px) 100vw, 247px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Care of diabetic foot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A group of doctors and nurses from primary health care institutions on the island as well as staff from the Princess Margaret Hospital (P.M.H) on Monday began a two- day advanced training workshop on the care of the diabetic foot.<\/p>\n<p>The training session being held at the Public Service Training Centre in Roseau has been organized by the Health Promotion Resource Centre of the Ministry of Health as a follow up to a basic training exercise which was held last October.<\/p>\n<p>Health Educator of the Health Education Unit, Adora Toussaint told GIS news \u00a0that this week\u2019s training will expose participants to a number of elements related to the diagnosis and care of the diabetic foot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis time we have taken it a bit further where persons from the Ministry of Health are invited to this program&#8230; they will be looking at how to assess a diabetic foot and how to treat a diabetic foot,\u201d she disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>According to the health educator, a diabetic foot is an infected foot that has an ulcer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is to say something is wrong with the foot. There is an infection in that foot and there is now an ulcer there. That is the training that our participants are getting &#8211; how to care for a person who comes in with a diabetic ulcer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Director of Primary Health Care services in Dominica, Dr. Martin Christmas says this training will better aid health practitioners in assisting diabetic patients to prevent leg amputations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe [can] all appreciate that in Dominica we see a number of young people suffering with amputations, sometimes very young people at the most productive stages of their lives. This is why the Ministry of Health has taken this step to complement our diabetic foot care policy through appropriate training of persons to make sure that we don\u2019t have such large incidents of amputations due to diabetic foot complications,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>He said the training programme aims to\u00a0empower people with diabetes to take better care of their feet and to help\u00a0lower cost of health care.<\/p>\n<p>The programme is being facilitated by a diabetologist from Slovenia, Dr. Vilma Urbancic and her team along with local surgeons Doctors Hendrix Paul, Julian D\u2019Armas and Spencer St. Luce.<\/p>\n<p>The two -day training programme which ends on Tuesday is being done in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Dominica, the Dominica Diabetes Association and the World Diabetes Foundation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A group of doctors and nurses from primary health care institutions on the island as well as staff from the Princess Margaret Hospital (P.M.H) on Monday began a two- day advanced training workshop on the care of the diabetic foot&#8230;.","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_cbd_carousel_blocks":"[]","footnotes":""},"categories":[17],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-73268","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-health"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
