Studies show joint replacement can significantly relieve pain and increase mobility in roughly 90% of people who get them.<\/p>\n<p>Joint replacement can be a life-changing procedure for the right patients, but it won\u2019t help everyone with hip or knee pain.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re suffering, how do you know if joint replacement is right for you? How can you weigh the potential benefits \u2013 less pain and a more active life \u2013 with the risks that always come with surgery? Let\u2019s see when joint replacement makes sense \u2013 and when it may not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REASONS FOR HIP OR KNEE REPLACEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Surgeons look at a few basic criteria. They include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Pain and stiffness.<\/strong> Most people who need joint replacement have severe pain that makes it difficult or near impossible to walk, climb stairs, get up from a chair, or carry on with other normal activities. The pain is also chronic, lasting at least six months.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0<strong> \u00a0Poor quality of life.<\/strong> Pain isn\u2019t all that matters, but how the pain affects your daily life. Do your joint problems affect mood. Do they limit what you can do?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0<strong> \u00a0Bone damage.<\/strong> X-Rays and other imaging may show severe joint damage from osteoarthritis or other conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0<strong> \u00a0Treatment failure.<\/strong> Medication, injections, devices \u2013 like walkers \u2013 and other treatments aren\u2019t helping enough, or only provide temporary relief.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0<strong> \u00a0Deformity.<\/strong> Your knee is severely swollen or your leg is bowed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHEN JOINT REPLACEMENT MAY NOT HELP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Joint replacement may not be a good idea if you have these problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Infection.<\/strong> The number one reason to avoid a joint replacement is recent infection anywhere in the body. That infection could spread to the area of the joint immediately after surgery or months later, causing serious problems \u2013 including joint problems and further surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0Other health problems.<\/strong> Anyone with a history of heart attacks or strokes or with currently uncontrolled diabetes may be at increased risk for complications. People who are very obese may need to lose weight before getting a joint replacement.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<strong>Uncertain cause of pain.<\/strong> Your surgeon must be certain that the pain you feel is really caused by joint damage and that replacing the joint will help.<\/p>\n<p>People can have pain that feels like joint pain, but the scans don\u2019t seem to show damage in the joint. There are lots of reasons for severe pain in the knee or hip \u2013 such as nerve damage \u2013 but a joint replacement won\u2019t help with them.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0<strong> \u00a0Pain when at rest but not when walking<\/strong>. Joint replacements are well established for treating pain that gets worse when walking, but people who only have pain while at rest are less likely to benefit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JOINT REPLACEMENT: THINGS TO CONSIDER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even if you meet the requirements for joint replacement surgery here are three key questions to ask yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0<strong>Could more conservative treatments work<\/strong>? Joint replacement is a common, effective, and relatively safe procedure. But it does have risks and full recovery takes months. Make sure that you\u2019ve tried all of the nonsurgical treatments available first.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Do you have help at home?<\/strong> It may be difficult to recover from joint surgery alone. For at least a few weeks, you\u2019ll likely need some assistance getting dressed, preparing food, changing your bandages, and moving around. If you don\u2019t have family or close friends who can help, see if there\u2019s a rehab facility where you could recover, or at least someone who is qualified in this regard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Are you committed to making changes?<\/strong> For a good result with joint replacement surgery, you need to commit yourself to hard work in the months before and the months after surgery. You may need to improve your lifestyle, eat healthier, lose weight, and exercise more.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to a successful joint implant, 10% of the success lies with the surgeon, 10% with the surgery and 10% with the physical therapist. The rest is up to the patient. If they don\u2019t work at recovery, they don\u2019t get better.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t commit to making changes, the chances that you will have complications \u2013 or that your joint replacement will fail \u2013 are much higher. Joint replacement requires mental and physical preparation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JOINT REPLACEMENT: NEXT STEPS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some suggestions for what you should do next.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Research joint replacement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many possible replacement joints and procedures. Check them out. Look at the wed site for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) or the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<strong>Talk more with your doctor or surgeon.<\/strong> Learn the specifics about how the surgery would help and what recovery would be like. Ask how much experience your surgeon has with the specific surgery and replacement joint that he or she is recommending.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Get a second opinion.<\/strong> Anyone considering a joint replacement, or any major surgery for that matter, might be well served by getting a second opinion.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0Consider the impact that surgery and recovery would have on your life.<\/strong> Think about how it would affect your job, if you work, or your home life. Talk to family members about whether they could help out during recovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Don\u2019t rush yourself.<\/strong> When deciding whether to get joint replacement surgery, take your time. Make sure you have answers to all your questions before you make your decision.<\/p>\n<p>Knee and hip replacements help reduce joint pain and increase mobility in many people.
