The police on the scene on Tuesday morning<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Attempts by Mayor of Roseau, Cecil Joseph, to allow vending outside the Public Service Union building on Boyd’s Avenue in Roseau for the rest of Creole in the Park (CITP), have proved futile.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday morning, police moved into the area to dismantle vending stalls on the premise that they were a hindrance in case of an emergency during the CITP.<\/p>\n

Joseph said the vendors have already paid the council to vend there and his pleas to the Police Commissioner to reverse actions of the lawmen were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have made a case on behalf of the city council for the vendors to the chief, that the vendors didn\u2019t place themselves there, we were the ones who made them go there,” Joseph said.<\/p>\n

According to him the police commissioner said he could not reverse his decision and “change what is supposed to be.”<\/p>\n

The mayor said he was disappointed in the way the stalls were dismantled and explained that in the past despite announcements made by officials, vendors were granted permission to sell their wares outside CITP.<\/p>\n

He went on to say that the police did not consult with the\u00a0held\u00a0Roseau\u00a0City Council to inform them of any changes. “It is by no fault of the city council because if we had received that communication we would have informed them (the vendors) of that change,” he pointed out.<\/p>\n

He stated that he intends to contact the manager of LIME and the person in charge of the Botanical Gardens to consider a remedy for the situation since the vendors have already paid the council to vend in the area.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile Police Chief Daniel Carbon said a no-vending order in the area was prepared to ensure control and management of traffic. He said traffic releases were sent to the radio stations on the island indicating that venders were not allowed on the section where Boyd’s Avenue meets with Valley Road.<\/p>\n

He said that it was brought to his attention on Monday that vendors had mounted stalls in that restricted area and the decision was made to take them down.<\/p>\n

“It makes no sense that we write up an operation order and not be in a position to execute the order as dictated in the order itself,” he said.<\/p>\n

The move has not gone down well with the vendors.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been vending here for ten years. What they expect me to do?\u201d one vendor asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a family to feed,\u201d another vendor stated.<\/p>\n

But the police chief was not moved and he firmly reiterated that no vending will be allowed on the Boyd\u2019s Avenue and Valley Road.<\/p>\n
