Bouyon Gwada group “Yellow Gaza Girls”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Authorities in Guadeloupe are clamping down on an offshoot of Dominica’s homegrown music Bouyon, which could have an effect on that genre in the French island.<\/p>\n

Known as “Bouyon Gwada” that offshoot is said to be causing a lot of problems in Guadeloupe because of its lewd and violent lyrics.<\/p>\n

Because of that, the authorities in Guadeloupe have been placing restrictions on Bouyon Gwada and things related to Bouyon music, according to music expert Mc Carthy Marie.<\/p>\n

“The authorities are withholding permission on anything that has to do with Bouyon,” he told Dominica News Online<\/p>\n

According to him, the perception created by Bouyon Gwada could create a problem for the original music from Dominica. “Bouyon from Dominica has caught up pretty big in Guadeloupe especially among the young people,” he said. “So Bouyon is seen as Dominica’s music and anything related to it is seen as Dominican.”<\/p>\n

He said many Bouyon Gwada concerts have ended up in chaos and violence. “The lyrics create an atmosphere of violence even before the concert gets going,” he said.<\/p>\n

Emile Depooter, Manager of the popular Bouyon Band, Triple Kay, said as far as he knows the restrictions by the French authorities have to do only with ‘Bouyon Gwada.’ “It is a type of music with lots of violence,” he said. “But as far as I know it has to do with Bouyon Gwada. Maybe it is a case for now … we don’t have any shows in Guadeloupe until February.”<\/p>\n

He thinks the French restrictions on Bouyon Gwada won’t have any long term effects on the original Bouyon. “It will have an effect for a period of time but then people will realize it has nothing to do with Dominican music,” he stated.<\/p>\n

He said he has spoken to promoters in Guadeloupe and they have said they love the music from Dominica.<\/p>\n
