Dominicans who are used to the names of two mountains on the island will soon have to change their perception of them as the government has accepted a recommendation to have these names changed.<\/p>\n

Morne Diablotin will receive the new name of Morne Sant\u00e9 (Mountain of Health) while Morne aux Diable will recieve Morne Lap\u00e9 (Mountain of Peace).<\/p>\n

Speaking on the state-owned DBS Radio on Tuesday principle advisor in the office of the prime minister, Eddie Lambert, said the changes reflect a quest to develop a national identity.<\/p>\n

In explaining the rationale Lambert said something is not right when Dominica was named after the Lord and two of the island’s prominent peaks were named after the devil. “We felt really this was not a bright and positive signal being sent out,” he said.<\/p>\n

He pointed out the name changes could be the first steps into shrugging off what he described as ‘negativity’ in the Dominican society. “We think perhaps in a subliminal manner will contribute to a beginning of the eradication of the negativity that is building in our society,” he said.<\/p>\n

The name change was suggested to the government by the special committee consisting of Eddie Lambert, the late Charles Maynard, Emmanuel Nathan, Reverend William Watty, Evangelist Peter R. Augustine and Clementina Monroe.<\/p>\n

Morne Diablotin is Dominica’s tallest mountain standing at a height of 4,747 feet while Morne aux Diable stands at 2,826 feet.<\/p>\n
