{"id":85677,"date":"2013-02-13T16:08:22","date_gmt":"2013-02-13T20:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/?p=85677"},"modified":"2013-02-14T13:57:16","modified_gmt":"2013-02-14T17:57:16","slug":"guilty-plea-for-carrying-cutlass-during-carnival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/homepage\/news\/crime-court-law\/guilty-plea-for-carrying-cutlass-during-carnival\/","title":{"rendered":"Guilty plea for carrying cutlass during Carnival"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_85681\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85681\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-85681\" alt=\"revelers\" src=\"http:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/revelers-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/revelers-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/revelers-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dominicanewsonline.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/revelers.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-85681\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On Carnival Monday<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the police were able to maintain a relatively peaceful carnival, a number of persons were arrested for breaching the 2013 Carnival Order.<\/p>\n<p>One of them, Errol Wallace, 19 of 15 Steber Street, Pottersville, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and being armed with an offensive weapon.<\/p>\n<p>The court was told on Wednesday that Wallace was searched by members of the Task Force during Carnival and he was found to be in possession of a cutlass hidden under his shirt and marijuana.<\/p>\n<p>His explanation to the police was that he was \u201clooking for them (the police) to give them the cutlass because he had taken it from people who tried to attack him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His lawyer, Ronald Charles, in mitigation told the court that his client was \u201cunder attack\u201d and had to run for his life. \u201cHe has fully co-operated with the police, also not wasted the court\u2019s time and pleaded guilty, we ask that a none custodial sentence be imposed on him,\u201d Charles said.<\/p>\n<p>Charles told the court that Wallace is a \u201cyoung man\u201d who has strayed a bit but was on his way to making amends and has been enrolled in a programme at the Business Training Center in Roseau.<\/p>\n<p>Police prosecutor Inspector Weekes told the court that \u201cit was time for the legislators to revisit the Carnival Order and impose stiffer fines for Offensive Weapon.\u201d Presently the maximum penalty for carrying an offensive weapon during Carnival is $1,000.<\/p>\n<p>Magistrate Candia George called the offences \u201cserious\u201d and called on him to take \u201chold of his life before it\u2019s too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo to church and behave yourself,\u201d she told him before slapping him with $1,000 for offensive weapon to be paid by March 31, 2013 or in default 6 months jail and for cannabis $500 to be paid by April 30, 2013 in default one month behind bars.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"While the police were able to maintain a relatively peaceful carnival, a number of persons were arrested for breaching the 2013 Carnival Order.
