We thank\u00a0Mr. Tim Durand and the DNO team for the invitation to host this column. In this\u00a0column we explore issues of business, the workplace and occasionally of life, for it is\u00a0difficult to separate our different aspects of our life. We invite you to write in with\u00a0your questions and suggestions.<\/p>\n<p>This week, we begin with a four part series on \u201cThe Learning Organisation: Building\u00a0a Career-Resilient Workforce\u201d. A Learning Organisation, according to Michael\u00a0Marquardt (Author of 16 Steps to Becoming a Learning Organisation), is one, which\u00a0stays on its toes, and adapts, changes and learns at every opportunity, every day, all\u00a0the time. It is one where the journey never ends. He argues that it is one sure way to\u00a0stay on track, on time and ahead of the competition.\u00a0He cautions, however, that there is no single one-way to become a learning\u00a0organization. Each organization must look at its own history, competitive\u00a0environment, skill base, technology, mission and culture and develop an appropriate<br \/>\nlearning structure and style. He offers a framework for creating a Learning\u00a0Organisation based on five elements:<\/p>\n<p>i) The organization itself \u2013 It creates and fosters powerful and productive\u00a0ways to learn and it does so through its culture; its vision; its strategy; and\u00a0its structure<\/p>\n<p>ii) Its people \u2013 Its people are empowered to learn, both inside and outside the\u00a0organization, whatever they need to know to become improve productivity<\/p>\n<p>iii) Its technology \u2013 This is the organisation\u2019s supporting and integrated\u00a0electronic network and tools. It includes its technical processes, systems\u00a0and structure of its knowledge framework<\/p>\n<p>iv) Its knowledge \u2013 This includes how the organization generates, collects,\u00a0stores, disseminates and uses information. It is the knowledge base or\u00a0institutional memory of the organization.<\/p>\n<p>v) Its overall learning \u2013 The learning is continuous and conscious. It\u00a0thoroughly permeates the other four components. Learning should happen\u00a0at three levels: individual; team or group, and the organization\u00a0Why then should an organization become a learning organization? The benefits are\u00a0many, however, in short, it is to become or remain competitive \u2013 one of the key, if not\u00a0the most important key to organizational success.<\/p>\n<p>This then leads us to question, how does an organization become a learning\u00a0organization? What is the litmus test for organizational success? The answer to both\u00a0questions includes \u201ca career resilient workforce?\u201d What, you may ask is \u201ca careerresilient\u00a0workforce?\u201d\u00a0Waterman et al (HBR Onpoint product #7206 \u2013 \u201cToward a Career-Resilient\u00a0Workforce\u201d by Robert H Waterman et al) define career resilient employees as those\u00a0equally committed to themselves and to the company\u201d. In short, they are the ones\u00a0looking out for themselves and the company. If we extrapolate this, a \u201cCareer resilient\u00a0workforce\u201d is one looking out for itself and the company.\u00a0This does not make sense. This cannot be part of the answer to the two questions\u00a0posed earlier: \u201cHow does an organization become a learning organization?
