Piloting the bill through the house was Minister for Legal Affairs and Tourism Minister, Ian Douglas, who labeled it as \u201ca very timely piece of legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Edison James, Opposition MP for Marigot, gave his full support to the bill. “The opposition fully supports the amendment to the bill but wants it to be not just a bill ‘passed\u2019 but also must be \u201c’fully implemented,’\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to James, the fines stated are \u201chuge\u201d and as a result those who are out there listening need to be aware of the \u201cseriousness\u201d of the crime of money\u00a0 laundering. \u201cThe fines for persons found guilty are huge … those who are out there hearing please see the seriousness and that parliament is not just making law in a vacuum,\u201d James stated.<\/p>\n
He said further that the laws passed by parliament must be applied to all. \u201cWe need to do this thing in unity\u2026we cannot only pass laws, we need to apply them irrespective of white, red, blue. The law must be applied in an equitable manner and we all must be prepared to assist in the scourge of money laundering,\u201d James remarked.<\/p>\n
Also adding voices of support to the bill were Kelver Darroux a junior government minister, National Security Minister Charles Savarin and Attorney General Levi Peter, among others.<\/p>\n
Peters referred to the bill as \u201ca significant piece of legislation.”<\/p>\n
However, he said that despite what some may say and think, the office of the AG and the government do not interfere in the criminal justice system and do not \u201cdictate what happens in the court.\u201d<\/p>\n
