COMMENTARY: Lost Opportunity

Jeffers Joseph
Jeffers Joseph

The recently concluded Elections on December 8, 2014, underscored the absolute depth of human deficiencies – an atrocity to the Democratic process anywhere within the framework of this universe. Among the litany of improprieties which manifested themselves were: greed, voter disenfranchisement, repression, victimization, obsession with power, arrogance, hubris, ruthlessness and total disregard for fellowmen. Clearly, our system of governance has shifted to something other than Democracy and the sooner we identify this ‘Elephant in the room’ the sooner we can begin to search for solutions. We fell asleep at the wheel and allowed ourselves to be driven well into a full-blown system of Autocracy – which is what is unfolding right before our very eyes. Those who purport inability to discern it are not blind; they just won’t see.

The collusion involving the Skerrit Administration, Hartley Henry and other collaterals to strategically infuse a surge of imported members of the Diaspora into the electoral process was indeed egregious. The assault perpetrated on fellow constituents’ rights to representatives of their choices will resonate for many many years to come, while those unconscionable foreigners return to their regular lives abroad. It is difficult to concede that for an airplane ticket and a handful of dollars, some would throw their fellow sons/daughters of the soil – who offered themselves as candidates to represent their interests in government – under the bus. This is the pinnacle of greed. And, those  culpable for inducing such voracious acts can only be guided by arrogance, hubris, ruthlessness and a pathological appetite for perpetual power.
The elections were blatantly yanked away from the hands of the United Workers Party – a painfully disconsolate reality to live with. What continues to be equally disconcerting to most, however, is the level of repression and victimization being imposed on an erudite in the likes of Dr. Thomson Fontaine. The holder of doctorate degree in Economics, Mr. Fontaine, who is an expert in Fiscal Management and has an impressive resume – having worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington DC – among other things. Obviously intellectually intimidating to the incumbent government, the Grand Fond candidate, who clearly won his seat in Parliament, is still being deprived of the sweet taste of victory. Similarly, most of the constituents have been disenfranchised by denial of the representative for whom they cast their ballots. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice anywhere.” Any other country would have gladly embraced Dr. Fontaine’s credentials as an important asset to their establishment; the question therefore is, why doesn’t this government recognize and utilize the skills, talents and intellectualism of citizens of the opposing side? My hope is that despite the fact that institutions are mere ‘rubber stamps’ (meaningless) to this government, our justice system will do the right thing by vindicating Dr. Thompson, thus awarding him the position he so deservingly earned – a place in our Parliamentary process.

    the uwp was the one who started the process in 1995 election, when they imported Dominicans from overseas to vote, the created the problem in laplanie and maune jaune when they ask some of their supporters to register in areas where the votes where marginal. this election they imported Dominican voters in the all the 21 constituencies, wheather you wish to stick your head in the sand that’s up to you, god is a god and just god, with all the lies and frabrication that is told by you and your party will only strengthen the labour party.

  5. December 22, 2014

    Jeff sometimes I wonder what has the Labour Party government has done to you all UWP supporters in the Diaspara. You all have no evidence to prove that people in the diapara was guven ticket to come down vote. Admit that the UWP was defeated and rejected at the polls for five more years by the people of Dominica. You are in New York sitting behind a computer and writing what ever you want about the government. People like Thompson Fountaine left Dominica to work lwith the IMF. He wad fired and came back to Dominica because he did not get what he wanted from the government he joined forces with the UWP. Admit that the labour party is there for five more years stole or not they are there for five more years so I suggest you give it up.

      Bull crap…What you begging for? Stand up and be counted and try to be a productive citizen without begging and putting your fellow brothers and sisters in slavery. This is not a UWP thing, this is a Dominican thing. Take the greed and injustice from your eyes and you will see fairness. We not moving on when people like you glorify lies, cheating and criminal activity. We as a nation can NEVER prosper under such conditions. If you love your country you would call for justice, fairness and a crime free society. But folks like you don’t love country and love to see your fellow man suffer. DLP NEVR won, they CHEATED!!!! Next time you play a game of cricket go with 50 man of the field and play with a 12 man team then come back and boast you win.. What a joke. The world laughing at us. That you wont understand,…..go begging !!

    Why don’t you blame the UWP who started this and introduced that kind of politics to Dominica. Buying of votes and flying in voters. Let’s not forget how Antilles Cement went bankrupt to bring in UWP in 1995. And even this pass elections on the 8th Dec they brought in people also. Stop being a hypocrite and singing for your supper.

    Dominica needs electoral reform to include absentee voting. This is an idea whose time has come. The law as it is written is antiquated. All the weeping and mashing of teeth on DNO serves no purpose except to express opinions of wrong doing, without any teeth behind these opinions.
    Concrete evidence must be presented and legal challenges should have already been filed in court if we are certain that an injustice was carried out during the elections. Reverting back to Dr. King’s quote about injustice, he did do something about it. Much of the freedoms that Caribbean nationals like us enjoy in the US is because of him and many others who were able to identify injustices and take action, thereby creating a better more enlightened society for all of mankind.
    That is certainly not the case in Dominica, for those who continue to believe that there are grave injustices with this current government and the manner in which they were elected into office. If some attention was devoted to some of the real issues on the ground and pressure were brought about on the government both by members of the diaspora and locals on the ground, the country would be moving forward earnestly.
    It amazes me that not one article has been written about the deplorable state of our health care system. Nothing is written about the hospital which we know is a mess. Activist both at home and abroad remain deliberately passive and they turn a blind eye to this. They are laser focused on perceived transgressions while remaining silent on other pertinent issues.
    I sincerely hope that concerned citizens can get past their angst for this government and make their contributions towards nation building, irrespective of either real or perceived voting irregularities during the recently concluded general elections.

      AI Quote “It amazes me that not one article has been written about the deplorable state of our health care system. Nothing is written about the hospital which we know is a mess.” ——-What? you have not been here on DNO as a regular for too long or what? Do a search for articles by Dr. Ivring “Eipigh” Pascal. Did you not hear of the scathing attack in the parliament by Mr. Skerrit on this man. DNO wrote articles on Mr. Skerrit response.

Is that not good enough for you reaction taken by Dominicans? Do you see any thing from the government side which looks like they are interested in resolving this matter. You must know that they the government hold the blade of this proverbial cutlass.

    Where were you Sir when the debate over the DAAS funds and land was developing? I suppose you are a Dominican living in the diaspora. You certainly did not come to vote, but you are attempting to use the power of your pen to sway public opinion on who is best to develop this country. Some came to vote and returned to continue their lives overseas. I suppose you chose not to come and remained where you are, but your ideas are printed for all to read. Wouldn’t you be happy if your opinion about the governance of this country was taken on board by the Dominican public? Wouldn’t that be as significant as actually voting? Just asking with a simple mind.

    What makes you believe that the election was “stolen from the UWP”. You sure sound intellectual but you have failed yourself. Where are your statistics? Your preferred party released the result of a poll a mere two days before the general elections which suggested that they were going to win the elections – 15 – 6. The only face to the poll was the UWP itself. There was no information about who conducted the poll and what methodology was used. Is that the source of your misguided conclusion about the winner of the election?

    Sir, are you aware that it took the threat of legal action for your preferred candidate for Grand Fond to return the DAAS money he transferred to his personal account? Are you aware about the allegations that three Credit Card Companies have sued your “master financial manager”? Are you also aware that the Roseau Credit Union has sued the self same “master financial” manager over his failure to service a loan which purchased the self same DAAS lands at Rosalie? Are you aware that there are other evidence (emails, letters, court documents, public admission of inappropriate behaviour) suggesting inappropriate conduct of your preferred Grand Fond candidate with the affairs (property) of the DAAS. Are you aware Sir, that the authorities at the Saint Mary’s Academy have no record of receiving any financial gift form your preferred candidate? He is on record reporting to the DAAS that he raised and provided certain funds to the SMA. Check for your self. His promise of legal action to “clear” his name has not gone further than a statement at a Press Conference that was held soem time very early in 2014.

    By the way, does the wishes of the people of Dominica (residents) matter to you and your ilk. The UWP received in excess of 17,000 votes. The DLP received in excess of 23,000 votes. A difference of 6,000 plus voters. Pray tell me Sir. Are you suggesting that the DLP brought in in excess of 6,001 voters from the diaspora to be able to “steal the elections”? Is that your submission. Apart from the Grand Fond seat where the difference between the candidates was less than 12 votes, where else could such a large number of diaspora votes could have made such a difference? Are suggesting that the difference in the number of voters in la Plaine between the UWP and DLP was as a result of people being brought in? What of Colihaut, St. Joseph, Roseau Valley, Castle Bruce, Salibia? does the same hold true? If you verily believe your argument. when did this large number arrive? Where did they stay? Please provide the evidence.

    Here’s hoping that DNO publishes my comments.

    The elected politicians did not vote themselves into office; Dominicans did! The people were given the opportunity to make a choice and they did. So, like it or not, respect the people’s right to choose – that’s democracy!

    Jeffers Joseph, The just concluded Election was just and fear, I don’t know if you leave in Dominica or if you leave on Mars, you are so out of torch with the reality you and others thinking like you must understand that the Dominican electorate don’t want the UWP to govern this country, in 1995 Dominicans made the worst mistake of their lives when they elected that piece of rubbish UWP to our parliament as the Government, the 4 and a half years was the worst years Dominica had ever seen, That’s when we had the most suicide, most murder, most unemployment, Victimization, late payment of salaries, the UWP bankrupt the Dominica social security, DOMLEC, Cable and wireless, it was the UWP that murdered the Banana industry, by promising farmers $1.00 a pound of bananas, it was the UWP that almost turn the hospital into a Hotel more people died during their reign because they could not afford the hospital bills, We the voters of Dominica ran with haste and voted the UWP out of office in 2000, 6 months before their term of office was due, never to return into office not in this life, and if there is a next life they will still be rejected, and just in case you didn’t know it was the UWP that started to bring plane loads of Dominicans to vote the only party that ever buy votes is them, not Freedom and definitely not Labour the UWP tried to steal the elections this year and Dominicans still rejected them I saw with my two eyes right in fond cole a green bar in the same yard with the poling station selling beers, Guinness and rum to voters i took photos, and there was UWP supporters publicly campaigning in the line against Timothy and that same thing happened in many other areas. And who the hell is Thomson Fountain did he expect to win something why was he fired from the IMF, if his contract was renewed is not the people of Grand found he would remember is because he lost his job he came here trying to fool the people but the people rejected him because they realize that the PHD he has stand for Pizza Hut Delivery, you and no other person can prevent Dominican’s leaving overseas to come back home and vote for a party of their choice and that’s what happened the UWP also bought tickets for Dominicans over seas so if it is good for the goose it is good for the gander so put your little tail where it belong and give Dominicans a brake, we made the right decision in voting Labour and Prime Minister Skerrit for not just 5 more years but until further notice Because the Crowd is already sinning LABOUR 2020, and we coming for all 21 this time.

    The most relevant lines that comforts me from these atrocities are from H.W Longfellow, in his poem , ‘The ladder of St, Augustin’
    The longing for ignoble things;
    The strife for triumph more than truth;
    The hardening of the heart that brings
    Irreverence for the dreams of youth;

    All thoughts of ill ; all evil deeds
    That have their roots in thoughts of ill;
    Whatever hinders or impedes
    The action of the nobler will; —
    All these must first be trampled down
    Beneath our feet, if we would gain
    In the fields of fair renown
    The rights of eminent domain.

    I would like to see a detailed analysis of the voting numbers. It’s very easy to present Dominica’s total population, coupled with the number of residents who were registered to vote during the last election versus this most recent election.

    I would also like to see the total number of residents for areas like Grand Fond, so that anomalies could be discerned. That being said, the county itself wasn’t fully prepared for change. There was a reasonable percentage of the population that was prepared for change, but not enough to award the election to the United Workers Party.

    Bear in mind that even those members from the diaspora who secured tickets to fly home and vote, would have voted for the United Workers Party if they believed that this was the best course for Dominica, as illegal as that practice might be and based on Dominica’s Constitution.

    What we have in Dominica is a partially uninformed electorate who can sometimes be swept up in the euphoria of machine politics and their political bosses.

    Learned members from the diaspora are sometimes more guilty of hubris themselves, when compared to the system and people that they try to castigate.

    Much of the brilliance presented on DNO through various articles would pass academic muster at most universities, while failing miserably in the real world. It’s akin to a politician who’s a great campaigner, but who lacks the skills to govern once the pomp and circumstance of the campaign trail is over and the bright lights of the stage is no more.

    Much of our scholars still function out of the a pervasive poverty psychology where they are only too happy to show everyone at home how much they have accomplished while lacking any real solutions that are tailored specifically for Dominica’s present and future.

    Dr. Fontaine is a good man by all accounts. However, I always thought that he would have a tough time winning his first time around in Dominica. His accomplishments in the international arena would find difficulty gaining a foothold in a rural areas such as Grandfond. The fact that he’s from the area doesn’t matter. If he did win, I hope that the legal process will do what it was designed to do.

    Governing in Dominica is a test of incredible patience and a willingness to teach and educate. Facts often give way to blind faith in politics. There are those who still believe that criticism of Melville Hall airport is akin to hatred for the Prime Minister Skerrit and the DLP.

    Not even the horrendous tail winds that sometimes force aircrafts to cancel their approach will convince them that the airport is bad for both our present and future development. Leave aside wishful drams of an international for now. It is only when we have a learned electorate that is willing to change, will change come about and gain a foothold like a germinating seedling. That time, unfortunately has not arrived yet.

    I saw Dominicans force the same DLP out of office by force of stones in 1979. I saw the registry burned to the ground and civil servants partake in a 30 day strike back then. I have seen Dominicans take action when they are fed up.

    I have also seen them elect the Dominica Freedom Party into office many times as the best possible solution for Dominica back then. Today, the populace is not yet ready for change. Trust and believe that when they ready for change, they will take action through the ballot box, yet again.

    The electorate did elect some new blood into the process. They vacated old heads like Ambrose and Tim-Tim who were unable to take cues that their time was up.

Fontaine failed in every other aspect, and that is why he was defeated. One must understand that acquired knowledge must be used to elevate others and not insult those who are less intellectual. Fontaine, kept belittling others by constantly insinuating that his level of comprehension exceeds everyone. That led to his demise today. Those who have jobs know that their salaries depend on pretending that they do not see, while the unemployed need the handouts. Dominicans have chosen easy come easy go, over the necessary hard work required to arrest a failing system and country! Mr. Joseph, where as your writing appears intellectually sound, there some factors you did not take into consideration. From what I gathered, you are highlighting your man Fontaine as one who is fit for the job and who was robbed of his sweet victory at the polls, but the question for you is, why is it that Mr. Fontaine, that great ” economist ” relinquished his position with the IMF and returned to Dominica, and automatically becomes fit to run the financial affairs of this country? It is mind bugling for a so call intellectual to team up with a bunch of un-achievers and not be rubbed off from the same syndrome of grabbing all we can.
    I have read many great articles from men like you Mr. Joseph, but all I can think about, is the fact that your intellectual ability might over- argue someone of a lesser sort, but at the end of the exercise, the person with the experience wins. Not all smart people has strong leadership qualities, and Roosevelt Skerrit is the man chosen to lead this country, and it was through a democratic process. If a man is so fit for a job, it must be proven by his track record and if that is not the case then he or she has failed miserably. If Mr. Fontaine was rubbed of his opportunity to lead in the financial affairs of the state wrongfully, he will bounce back and be that persons, if not, he will continue to stay on the side-line and bray like his other colleagues and they will lead from a distance and have persons like you to push their agenda.
    Dominica needs men who are prudent in financial management, not a bunch of un-achievers who wants to grab at its purse, and as long as the God of Isaac rules and reigns over the Isles, his eyes will hover over this Nature island. It is a fact that some men was born to talk and eat the fruits thereof, I am afraid Mr.Joseph, you might be one of them. Lets join hands with the powers that be and move this country forward.

    We rarely see this kind of open commentary this side of heaven. Well written and so true. Your wish that justice be done is however, wishful thinking, because earlier this year there was an article regarding the complain by Clayton Shillingford and the ensuring investigation by the association of the justice system in Dominica, where one of the judges replied that they couldn’t rule against the PM of the island. And many Dominicans were against Clayton. I thought then as I do now that my country is finished. I happen to live in a democratic country (thank God for that), where a judge ruled against the PM and we the citizens of this country are waiting for another bombshell soon. The case has been filed by the ex-senator. A little bit of rum and a few handouts are all it takes in exchange for our fundamental bit of power which we are given on election day. I say AMEN to Dominica. For some it is because they are uneducated and only know getting things free so bribery is easy, for some it their jobs, they only think of themselves. Like you I hope Dr. Thompson is treated fairly, but I will not hold my breath. I just hope and pray that Dominicans wake up from their dream because D/A is at the bottom of the other islands. Just imagine Mr. Skerrit was so affraid of Mr. Thompson I heard he was outside the polling station dishing out bribes to make sure he lost the seat. My thought – I have seem much bigger men fall

    J. J. I address your commentary with some concerns….The recently concluded Elections on December 8, 2014, underscored the absolute depth of human deficiencies, makes no logical sense other than bundling a bunch of words….

    The collusion involving the Skerrit Administration, Hartley Henry and other collaterals to strategically infuse a surge of imported members of the Diaspora into the electoral process was indeed egregious.

    J.J. Big words with no directed proof ……. Dr. Thompson, LOST period…A win by 10000 or 1 vote is a win. To thus awarding him the position would be as you stated…underscored the absolute depth of human deficiencies – an atrocity to the Democratic process anywhere within the framework of this universe. Among the litany of improprieties which manifested themselves were: greed, voter disenfranchisement, repression, victimization, obsession with power, arrogance, hubris, ruthlessness and total disregard for fellowmen,,,,
