DFP statement on the devastatting passage of Tropical Storm Erika

TS Erika caused untold devastation in Dominica
TS Erika caused untold devastation in Dominica

Our hearts go out to all Dominicans particularly those who lost love ones and property following the devastating passage of Tropical Storm Erika on Thursday, August 27, 2015.

This is a big blow for us as a nation since we suffered loss of life, extensive damage to properties and infrastructure all over Dominica. Particular mention must be made of the communities of Petite Savnane, Petite Soufriere, Delices, Coulibistrie, Bath Estate, Checkhall Valley, Colihaut, Bioche and Dublanc.

It’s a very sorry situation and our prayers and support are with all Dominicans at home and abroad. We make this special appeal to come together to clean up in our communities while the authorities strategize and mobilize the required resources for the rebuilding of our beloved country.

We congratulate DBS greatly for a job well done in keeping the nation informed. We also commend the government of Dominica, the National Emergency Planning Organization (NEPO), the acting disaster coordinator, his colleague and staff, the police, the leader of the opposition, all members of parliament, the local government officials, the many volunteers and all those who continue to provide leadership to the people of Dominica in this time of crisis.

May God Bless you all.

Well done Freedom Party. However, what happen to Q95, the religious stations, or were you all only queued to or know of only DBS who carried coverage. Of course DBS needs to be commended, but they are NOT the only radio station on island. Q 95 equally did an excellent job.

That DEP party again, the first big blow to dominica was when they sellout to the labour party and help produce that red storm of 15 years

These are sad times for D/ca. Thank God help has arrived with more to come.
Cooperation is absolutely necessary among all those who provide leadership.
United we stand. Divided we fall. We are going forward; not backward.
There is a place which is also vivid in my mind. It is Coulibistrie. Why is that? The weekend prior to this disaster, a blind, 74 year-old man was apparently poisoned and both hands tied to his sofa. He died while being transported to the Health Center at St. Joseph.
We were shocked that someone did that to a vulnerable, helpless man. His death is under investigation. No doubt for now it is at a stand still.
After this disaster, I thought of this man and wondered, as we say, his blood was crying to Heaven for vengeance. When disaster strikes, it also affects the good along with the bad.
I heard three people died in Coulibistrie and wondered, if the life of the perpetrator of this heinous crime was affected. God knows and that person.

We need to get off this self pity nonesense. Disasters occur all the time all over the world. Why do we think that somehow we should not be susceptible to them like everyone else. Especially when we are situated smack down the middle of the hurricane zone and iwe’re one of the most active volcanic countries in the world. We always try to come up with supernatural reasoning for our demise. We need to accept that these tragedies are unfortunately part of calling Dominica our home. To use a common phrase “It comes with the territory.”.
