A 29-year-old man from Dominica is now dead and his passenger nursing serious injuries following what has been described as a “violent chain-reaction crash” which occurred on Interstate 75 about 11.30 pm on Thursday 28th May 2015 in Miami, USA.

Johnathan Raymond Astaphan, 29, who was behind the wheel died in the accident while his passenger, 25-year-old Dr. Patrissia Rolle, also from Dominica, suffered serious injuries.

The other vehicle, a BMW, was being driven by a 17-year-old Miramar girl identified as Liza Angulo.

She also died in the accident.

According to the Sun Sentinel, a USA based media house, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), stated that the crash began when a flatbed tractor-trailer hauling concrete barriers was leaving the highway’s median where construction has been taking place and was struck by the vehicle driven by Astaphan.

The momentum of the impact carried the car and the truck about a quarter-mile down the highway.

The vehicle Angulo was driving struck the left rear of the truck causing some of the concrete barriers to fall on top of her car.

Another trailer then came along and ran into the crashed vehicles.

Neither truck driver suffered serious injuries.

The scene was described as “horrific” by witnesses.

  1. The Real Facts

I accessed two other articles and comments. Oh my! They made me extremely sad. It was indeed a horrific accident.
These days that is all we hear of and right in the city where we reside. Coming in one evening last week there was an accident at an intersection close to where I reside in Toronto. Tonight, again, coming in there was another accident. I do not think there were fatalities.
A few years ago I telephoned the Traffic Department about that same intersection and stated, the city should place cameras in that area and that it would make money for traffic violations. The response I got was, the cameras are usually switched to different locations. This is not so at that area.
Over the weekend, a car driver hit a woman which caused her to fly through the air and landed in front of a vehicle. She was hit again. She died. The driver of the first vehicle (a white car) left the scene. As the police, the neighborhood residents told him to turn himself in.

you all commenting may he rest in piece may he this and that he was nice and what not but as a highway patrol officer in texas for the past 15 years to push a truck A QUATER MILE down a road he was obviously breaking ALL speeding laws on that road even with a 75mph speed limit there is no way he could have pushed a truck that far . this young man was breakign the law when he died .
and threw his stupidity and neglegence he caused the death of a young lady and put another one in the hospital.
only 1 person on this seems to be givin the guy his wrong and he is to blame for everythign that has happened. he went lookign for his death and found it just a pitty he had to take a young lady to his grave with him and put another in the hospital .
SO PLEASE PEOPLE OF DOMINICA DONT COMMENT ON WHAT YOU ALL KNOW NOTHING ABOUT AND WHEN SOMEONE HAS DONE WRONG TELL THEM THEY DID WRONG THIS YOUNG MAN SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER JUST A PITTY 2 OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE HAD TO PAY THE PRICE AS WELL

Jesus said God is not the God of the dead, but the living! ( he is the God of the living ,not the dead).

Telemaque, man you keep making matters worse for yourself, since you are too full of pride and self conceit. When are you going to humble yourself to acknowledge your flaws?

I have a feeling that Jesus is very happy with you, here –you don’t understand the Scriptures why do you use them; even in this situation–two families are now in grief over the loved ones

Jesus was not simply speaking about people who have passed away in the body (what you call dead) He was speaking about those who went to their graves with a dead conscience and soul Dead to God is Spiritual death–the body profits nothing! “Dust you are and to dust you shall return”

God spoke to him (Moses), saying, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living” Mark 12: 26-27.

Where is Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?

Elizabeth; you can say whatever you wish; you can make belief, you can say what you believe people want to hare so that you can be loved. Francisco Telemaque interpret the word of God according to how the Sprit leads me. I have done as I am instructed in 2 Timothy 2: 15:

“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

The reason God told people to study his word, rightly dividing the word of truth, is for exactly because of the crap you are talking here. If you do not believe what I said is written in the Books of Proverbs go and read it for yourself, and then interpret it the Elizabeth way, and then fight fight with the God Jehovah! I am not doing this to gain favor, or love you see.

All I ask is that you read from the King James version of the Bible, or an Roman Catholic Bible.

It is his fault why I withdraw my political support, nevertheless, if Mr. dunce Skerrit wish to tell me to back off from his head, trust me he knows how to get in touch with me. The same messages you receive, Mr. Skerrit is also a recipient.

Up till now, I cant understand how a car could drag or push a flatbed tractor trailer, laden with concrete barriers , a 1/4 mile distance from where it was struck.

I do not know the individuals, but it touched me and I know what the family members are going through, my heart goes out to the bereaved families, may the souls of the deceased “RIP”and I wish Dr. Rolle, a speedy recovery

the speed limit is 75mph. at that speed,a car can hit with tremendous force .the truck came out on the hwy and crossed 3 lanes.there was no way he could have avoided the impact.the truck driver should have stayed in one lane to allow traffic to safely pass around him while he accelerated.

I just read where you called me know it all, but if you were not you were as academically educated as I am you would have no difficulties understanding how the vehicles could have traveled that , and that is the difference between people like you and I.

So let me give you a brief lesson: DNO I beg your indulgence.

      Distance And Time

If an object is in one position at a certain time, and is in a different position at a later time, we know that movement has occurred. How can we describe the details movement in a meaningful way. When we travel by automobile, and note the behavior of the speedometer, we see that we rarely travel very long at constant speed for one reason or another, it frequently necessary to slow down or speed up. By the time we get to our destination we traveled at many different speeds.

However, there is still one speed-the average speed – that can be applied to the entire trip. The idea of average speed draws upon two familiar concepts, distance, and time…

      • Francisco Telemaque
        June 1, 2015

The idea of average speed draws upon two familiar concepts, distance, and time. I am not going to make it too simple to you, I confuse you a bit by withholding some information, so that you can do some research, or go to school. In any event here a formula.

Average speed = distance traveled/time of travel. We simply this equation by substituting:

        v = average speed

        x = distance traveled

t = time interval for the motion Hence, we arrive at v bar =x/t therefore we have v = miles/ hours, also v = meters/seconds.

That is how you arrive to the what you do not understand, and you will never comprehend it all unless you learn some physics. I know I doh is policeman eh, but I doh believe you can touch me educationally.

17 and 29 years old–good Lord! This is the time we ask, “why did they have to leave so soon”?

I mean 17 years old and heading a bright future–well loved and appreciated by all–and all of a sudden death comes knocking at the door, hitting her down cold, without one second of defense. The same for that young man of 29 years old–also heading into a bright future, the journey ending so tragically, without expectation.

How can we deal with such terrible tragedy if we don’t turn to the shelter of God’s compassion? Maybe we are asking why did He allow it in the first place? Good question; but who can answer it?

To the families of this “tragic storm” you have every reason to be dismayed right now, but it will not last forever. Believe it or not, God’s peace is the only energy you need right now–He is giving it to you; what you need to do is receive it by faith–I speak from personal experience.

My sympathy goes to all of you.

Facts, unless your family originated in Suriname, or Syria, and you are Syrian born, the probability of you related to the Astaphan’s of Dominica, is practically zero to nil!

Remember I mentioned Tony uncle on Bath Road? Well learn this: my late sister Barbara worked with him, he is the first Astaphan I know to married a black Dominican of light complexion okay. Now it was rumored, and alleged that George Astaphan the late had children born to black Dominican mothers, I do not know if that is true.

So at your age the only way that could be possible is if you descend from George, or one of the woman on Bath Road children. All I have done here is do a little bit of deduction reasoning. Since then any Tony is married to a black Antiguan, I know another Astaphan who is married to a friend of mine from Wesley daughter. So as to set the record straight perhaps you give me your genetic connection.

Facts, I thought I left Dominica long ago, but boy you left so long ago it shows. I have an old Telephone directory used in Dominica in 1999 – 2000, and not even one person name Roll is listed in there.

That tells me the entire family are perhaps long gone from this earth, or have all left Dominica. The last Roll I recall when I was a kid he had: I believe a shop, or store in Roseau. As for the Astaphan’s they to have changed, they assimilated in Dominica society, Tony Astaphan is an example, it started with his Uncle who operated a motor mechanic shop opposite to the convent on Bath Road.

And if you have no concept of the word assimilate, don’t jump to any silly conclusion, just keep in mind the old Astaphan Klan would not have left Dominica in their heyday Life has changed in Dominica, family name means nothing theses days. Telemaque’s naturally tall and towering, name meant something in the twenties, and into the 1950’s now we are unknown though we are many!

I feel sorry for both victims, however, if the impact caused the car, and the tractor tailor to travel a quarter mile. That boy Astaphan foot was on the gas peddle! He was moving, speed is a factor in this accident. Then again we drive as fast as we wish in Dominica, on the horse backs we called road.

In America where one drives and there are hundreds of miles of flat straight Freeway, and highway ahead of us, we are tempted to drive as fast as we wish, that is why there are speed limits in this country. No matter in which State one resides Speed limits range from 35, 40, 55, 65, 70, and 72 miles per hour, near schools it varies between 20, and 25. The only place in America it is allowed to hit 80 miles per hour is at a place between El Passo Texas, and San Antonio Texas.

In any event when a vehicle is seen on the median, the approaching vehicle must slow down and go into the far left hand lane! A tractor trailer could be more than thirty feet long, at least it could be longer…

There are areas on I-75 where the speed limit is 75 so he could have been going at the speed limit and the flat bed pulled out in front off him and he just couldn’t stop. I see it too often where theses trucks just pull right in front of the little rides as soon as the turn on their signals cause they no these small vehicles can barely cause them damage. So he could have been well in his right. We don’t know whose right or wrong cause DNO didn’t say. All we do know is two people lost their lives and one more if fighting for hers.

      To: Mr Telemaque

Hello and good afternoon my people. Well Mr Telemaque you can’t just offer your condolence to the victim families rather you must blame someone. The only thing this has to do with our country is two of our citizens are involve but you have to talk about the road condition in sweet Dominica. If you used half of your brain power for something positive you probably would invent something that would help people rather you just have to say something negative about our people.
My condolence to the victim families.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        June 1, 2015

“I feel sorry for both victims,” (Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque).

Tony the quote above are the very first words I wrote, if that is not extending sympathy, or condolences; than I must be one who cannot read or write English. There is nothing wrong with what I wrote, except the Dominica mentality is at work, that hypocritical mentality.

I will say this: Jesus said God is not the God of the dead; but of the living! In the Book of Proverbs, we are thought that when a child is born we should morn; be sad: however, when someone dies we should be happy okay, dance and be merry.

Nevertheless we always operate opposite to the word of God. They do not like to hear me talk about speed was a factor, but the law’s of physics dictates my view. If you hit a tractor tailor, and both vehicles traveled that distance, that is not normal!

You keep your mouth shut: people have a right to say what they want, it is all about freedom of speech, at lease in America. You and others may not like what I say, that is your prerogative, I cannot compel anybody to like or appreciate my opinions. I comment on subjects and issues according to what attract my attention.

If the report states the man hit a tractor trailer coming off a median (side of the road), and both vehicles traveled a quarter of a mile, that car hit the trailer like rocket!

The laws of physics dictates that! If someone like my comments, great, if they hate it, and me personally in the process, it makes no difference to me, you see. I am not program to say what every like to read, the least I can do is sympathize with the hurting, but my sympathy will not bring the dead back to life.

Jesus said God is not the God of the dead, but the living! ( he is the God of the living, not the dead).

Ignoramus… did it even occur to you that the truck could have pulled out in front of the car without sufficient notice and moving too slowly to allow for a safe stop by Mr. Astaphan? If your feeble brain can even comprehend this – yes, it is difficult to stop when driving at 45 to 50 miles an hour and a huge lumbering truck just pulls out in front of you doing 15 to 20 miles!!

@ Francisco, sometimes I wonder why you just can’t read without making these idiotic comments. You seem to feel because you are in the US you are smarter than everyone on DNO. If you know so much, you would know that driving at only 40 MPH depending on the surface of the road that you are driving on, and the size of the vehicle your vehicle comes in contact with, you can travel more than a 1/4 mile unless you are stopped by an immovible object. And as it pertains to speed limits in the different states, you are dead WRONG. If DNO will allow me I will post some speed limits in TX and GA so you will learn to research before posting so much garbage. If you have driven in or around Dallas, driving north from Freeport you would have known that the speed limit is over the 80 that you mentioned. And for your info driving South on I-75 going to FL from GA there are sections where the limit is 75 MPH.

Obviously you’ve never driven on an interstate….Compared to those drivers Dominicans don’t drive fast at all since we use kmh and they use mph we may think we’re driving fast but they drive much much faster up there smh >.>

Francisco, why don’t you go hide in a dark closet, and tape your hands and fingers to the wall so it can stay off the computer keyboard!!!!

So here we have another tragic circumstance all because negligence, of those in authority –when will it ever come to an end?

      • May 31, 2015

For those of you who didn’t go to that link, you have done so. You would have read that people who live around that area are complaining about how dangerous it is to drive those roads–according to commentators. Some of them said that they have complained to the authority but to no avail.

Speed driving had nothing to do with that accident–the truck driver was at fault–according to the article. Astaphan,s car was stuck under the truck–that was the reason for long drive after the collision.

Somebody is responsible for that fatal death, but it is not the two young people who died–Let us hope there is going to be an investigation.
