Dominican student injured in Venezuela

A Dominican student in Venezuela has been injured in that South American country, according to information reaching DNO.

The authorities in Dominica are tight-lipped on the matter with one high ranking government official telling DNO that he could neither deny nor confirm the incident. He said when he is in a position to speak, DNO will be called.

The parents of the student were too distraught to speak to DNO but a source close to the family with inside knowledge of the incident said it occurred on Tuesday in Caracas.

According to the source, the student was on a bus with other university students when it was stopped by armed men. The driver of the bus was ordered to get off and the men took over. In the process of driving away, the armed men began pushing the students off the bus.

The Dominican student’s leg got fractured while being pushed off the bus, the source said.

The student was eventually taken to hospital and according to the source has been recuperating very well.

Dominica News Online will continue to to seek an official report from the authorities on the matter.

alot of you ignorant and foolish dominicans making comments that it have crime every where..just like the economy bad every where..

but to have armed men hijacked a bus in caracas or venequela’s capital is truly hopeless and unacceptable….
venezuela has one of the worlds highest crime rate and if allu think allu poor and want to send allu children and study in that hell hole to come back and work for crazy-t.. good for allu dummies

BUt why would they have to return to work for Crazy T? Why can’t they return to be entrepreneurs like Crazy T? People like your are the reason for lack of development in Dominica.

Still have that Mentality of another providing for you. These students are getting an education. In harms way or not, they are struggling to get an education to better themselves and family.

Yes, your would prefer them in the streets of Roseau selling Drugs?
      Silly.

Why is the government tight-lipped about an incident that could have happened anywhere in the world and could have been much worse? Is there something to hide or shield? Or are they trying to protect the image of Chavez and Venezuella? After all, these sort of things happen everywhere in the world, and the fact that those armed men brushed them out of the bus and did not harm them or raped them is proof that they did not mean to hurt them. I just do not understand what they are tight-lipped about. I would understand if they confirmed the information and did not give details until they had the facts. But to be tight-lip about it to the point where they cannot confirm or deny just does not make sense. I mean even if papa Chavez is a friend I don’t understand why informing the nation would affect Chavez when worse than that happen on a daily basis all over the world. In fact not too long ago worse crimes than this happened in our little Dominica with tourists. What are they hiding? Boy I feel there is much more than what DNO reported but unfortunately, with Chavez being who he is and our PM being another one like Chavez, we might never get to know the real fact.

I felt that this incident was a serious one, which no one should write (lol) laugh out loud about, but rather be sympathetic with the person involved.
Maybe I should have however, kept my opinion to myself.

Venezuala is still a safe place and this is just an isolated incident. Just some misdirected youth.
The dominican student(s) should have been more careful and hired a taxi to get home or where ever they were going
I hope this doesn’t affect the Venezualan tourism industry because venezualans are a kind and caring people.

      December 5, 2012

So I take it that you are also a student on a government scholarship living in Caracas where a taxi costs about 40bsf and the monthly stipend is 1000bsf. Tell me what are they supposed to do take taxi everywhere they go? And not like being in a taxi would be any safer. You could get robbed/kidnapped by the driver himself. You could get shot just stepping out of the vehicle. And so much for isolated incident, venezuela doesn’t have one of the highest murder rates in the world for nothing. This place is anything but safe.

Let us do the right thing and wait for the dominican ambassador to venezuela address the nation on the incident. I also suggest that we update our responsibilities to protect our students everywhere, After all, they are the future.

    • Malatete
      December 3, 2012

Why do we need the ambassador to address this? Is it a state secret? A matter of national security? In a free country the press would report freely. Why all this secrecy and covering up?

In an armed robbery all the student got was a fractured from being pushed from the bus. Obviously the robbers were not interested in hurting or killin the students but they just wanted the vehicle. Why are we not praising the lard that its only a fractured leg? All the students could be shot or blown up, serious people get a grip. I hope the student recovered from the injury and trauma, quickly, and her family praise God that it was not worse. What is the family had heard he or she was shot?

   :?: These evil leaders and dictators always foool and take advantage of the economically and less fortunate ones by spreading propan
ganda against countries like the U.S and U.K.But they never seem to send their children and close ones to study in the countries like Venezuela they pretend to love, they send them to Europe and the same U.S they criticise.Gadaffi hated the west so much, but his children studied and lived among the wealthiest area in London in 10 million pounds houses.Open your people, those so called leftist and anti-west leaders just want the position of the western leaders to hold for life.   :?:

      December 3, 2012

so who fool you and tell you that both England and America are not dangerous.

      • Malatete
        December 3, 2012

It is all a relative, of course.let’s look at the statistics (U.N.) and then make a judgement. In 21010 the homicide rate for Veneuela was 45.1 i.e. 45.1 intentional killings per 100,000 of the population (internal university studies in Venezuela predict that this rate will rise to 67.0 for the current year). In the same period Dominica registered 22.1 and the U.S.A. 4.2. You may want to argue the point with the U.N. but based on their statistical data Venezuela is definitely a violent ountry, and increasingly so.

That’s what u trying n tell me. think before u speak, dominicans to quick to play the blame game. everyone has a choice, if u doh want to go venezuela don’t go.. but it have students tht went and came back and are succesfull. so tired look for reasons to blame somebody and instead offer the family and victim your prayers.

«Skerrrit» also sends «his citizens» to the US, Canada, UK, France, China, and Japan, ok then. Did you know? I suspect not.

Ignorance is bliss and it robs Dominica of a chance to truly grow.

  22. Very concerned
    December 2, 2012

So what’s the secrecy about? An American student dies in Dominica, within hours a statement is released, a Dominican is involved in an incident in Venezuela, almost a week later the Government is tight lipped. Next level!

    • Peeping Tom
      December 3, 2012

Well, did the US government release the statement? Do you know of any government that routinely releases statements when its citizens are involved in an accident or some other misfortune overseas: a car accident, a slip-and-fall accident, raped, even murdered? Did you ask your government to release a statement on the recent murders of Dominicans in various parts of the C/bbean?

This incident is an unfortunate and scary matter. However, it is unrealistic to expect any government (whether Skerrit’s, Pappy’s, or the UWP’S) to jump to the airwaves each time a Dominican student is involved in a misfortune overseas. What would be the purpose of this news release? Who would keep track of the thousands of Dominican students studying all over the world (including Caribbean islands, USA, Canada, U.K, etc) so that YOU would be informed on a daily basis of their daily lives? Do you care to know if they are scoring high grades, making break through research, smoking pot, eating grass for meals, can’t pay their student loans? Do you care to know all these or just about certain occurrences in certain countries?

Stop making a mockery of people by using their suffering to take cheap political shots. Show some sensitivity and compassion.

        December 3, 2012

The students studying in venezuela were sent there by the Government of Dominica. It is only right that a Government official should make a statement. They are ultimately responsible for our loved ones studying in Venezuela.
If it was a Minister or representative of any government department our officials would be expected to say something about de situation on their behalf.

So who is responsible for the safety of our citizens when our Government sends dem to study abroad? If a student gets hurt u mean our officials have no business saying something about de situation on their behalf?

How about if a student emerges as valedictorian upon graduation? Will our officials be there to pump up his/her chest on de behalf of the student’s hard effort?

        I waiting

I agree. No matter who wants to spin your comment whichever way. This was my fist thought on reading the piece. How can I be sensitive and compassionate on a situation I know very liitle to nothing about. I was given the opprtunity to do so for the US student. Up to this morning the PRO of police was reporting on the US student inicdent and now those who can provide information on a Dominican overseas are tight-lipped. Rubbish!!
