Kelver Darroux says situation in Layou is ‘terrible’

A bus stuck in flood waters in Layou

Parliamentary Representative for the Layou Kelver Darroux is reporting that his community has been severely devastated by flooding and landslides associated with heavy rainfall caused by the passage of Tropical Storm Ophelia

“As I speak, the situation is very terrible. I am now parked in the area of the old Hillsborough gas station and the water there is high. In fact there are some young men from Layou who are now walking through and the water is almost covering their head,” he said.

He is also cautioning persons not to traverse the area which has been deemed “very dangerous”.

“The village of St. Joseph is also flooded as well and it’s posing some serious problems there. I want to ask persons to seek alternative routes or head back home. A lot of water is falling from the Tarreau cliff so persons shouldn’t traverse there. The Clack Hall area is also flooded,” he said.

He also confirmed that a bus transporting students from Belles is stuck in the water.

“The students are safe but there are a number of persons trying to make their way through the water. I don’t think they should be doing that because you never know what’s in the water,” he advised.

how can we help the people who lost almost everything( they got life so didn t loos all). i think a place should be named to put stuff for the people in need. people should be cooking and give them food. those visiting for the festival should think of holding some cloths and food to help out these people.

IN A HUMANITARIAN SITUATION GREED TAKES OVER, HOW SHAME-FULL TO HEAR OF SUCH BEHAVIOR OF OUR PEOPLE. DISGUSTING, AND DISGRACEFUL BEHAVIOR.

it was more for fun, and some of the people were there all day and no one brought them lunch or water, thats a shame too…

        September 30, 2011

In both cases the behavior is disgusting, where is the fun in charging people during a disaster, where is their compassion? And as for these who standby and watch those people working so hard and never thought of offering them something to eat or drink should be ashamed of them selves.

I am a Dominican and it really hurts when I have to read these negative comment some of us Dominican have to take out precious time and write. This is just show us that, some of us will never adjust our minds, some of us will never grow up, why? Simply because we choose to be ignorant. As some people stated we are now living in the last days and now is the time if you all have not done so yet, now is the time to give you all selves to God, now is the time to make God your own, now is the time to say to God I give my self to you oh lord so you can use me Lord, now is the time to say Lord, I search high and low couldn’t find nobody, looked all over, could’nt find nobody Lord, nobody great, nobody greater Lord, nobody greater than you Lord and that is why I know I belong to you. This is the things that should be coming out of you all mouth and stop talking so negative about this, that, and the other. Am vert sorry to hear what happen in Dominica I am praying that things will work out and am encouraging my brothers and sisters to hold on because our God is able and he will solve the problem. God Bless!!!!

As dominicans we need to put our differences aside, and help bring our people together, this is god’s work and there’s nothing anyone can do about it,this is bible talking, all this things shall come to pass in the last days, so we need to stop blameing everybody for everything and make our callings and elections sure. god bless us all.

Dominicans I share your pain. The same thing happened to us in St.Lucia last year. We need to take all warnings seriously.Ive noticed that these disasters happen when we are not or least prepared. We are still in the hurricane season and we need to be prepared at all times during the season . The most you can do now is to put your heads together and help each other out in the various communities that were affected. begin creole herritage month in KOudemen Style.

My brothers and sisters in Dominica should be united in times like these and please stop the name calling and negative comments. If there is one time that unity is needed is now. You all should get together, gather what is left and help each other. United you all will stand and divided you all will fall. Come on and help each other for goodness sake.

      September 28, 2011

Though I share your sentiment, sometimes it is very hard to predict the outcome of the weather forecast even with the most sophisticated equipments today. You shold not blame the meteorologist.

    • Touls
      September 28, 2011

Do you pay attention to the weather report? Do you visit the website or call the weather hotline? It is available to all Dominicans. This storm has been doing some crazy things as far as movement is concerned. The met office cannot accurately predict what a system does that’s why they give forecasts. Just sayimg.

By the way the driver of that bus made what could have been a fatal error when he tried to navigate the flood. Not with people children on board. I think his employer should be seriously considering replacing him.

Dominicans we need to respect each other and clean up their actions. God is a good God but he allows certain things to happen in our lives. We have to take heed and learn from these signs, and change our ways.

      • September 29, 2011

Can you think of a better time to look up than when you are in trouble? Sometimes God can only get our attention when our foundations are shaken. He loves us enough to shake our foundations so we may look up!

We must learn to respect each other. We are in hurricane season, and anything can happen. No amount of police or government ministers can protect us during a storm. We have to listen to the weather news and do wht we are supposed to do. God bless and protect us during the hurricane season.

I really feel for the people of layou. But in all honesty, I hope they learn and listen when warnings are given. When the landslide that created the dam happened, they were advised to move from the area. Thankfully it burst with little or no casualties. Then after the burst, they advised to be vigilant and so on, still layou exists. That place should not be there. And I don’t blame the villagers only, multiple governments have been and should have helped them find alternative places to live. The questions though is, would the villagers move?

I’ve always questioned the reporting of DNO and wondered weather its reporting is truthful. I listened to the live DBS Radio report/interview of Hon.Darroux and heard him say “the water was chest high to young men crossing through”. PLEASE DNO report events as they are do not exaggerate; HONEST AND TRUTHFUL reporting makes loyal readers

ADMIN: Have you ever thought that the report he gave us was given AFTER he was interviewed by DBS. The water has been rising consistently. SMH
