Dominican farmers, technicians, and extension officers are this week learning a new farming technique.
The participants are attending a Training of Trainers workshop on Hydroponics Techniques within a shade house/protected area.
Hydroponics is a process of growing plants in water using non-nutrient media, i.e. without soil.
This four-day training, which commenced on Monday 24th October 2016, is being held at the One Mile Agricultural Station in Portsmouth and is being facilitated by Dr. Leighton Naraine and Mr. Stuart LaPlace of St. Kitts-Nevis who arrived on the Thursday prior to fabricate and install the hydroponic system in collaboration with Mr. Odile’ Valmond and local workers in training.
This training forms part of a Productive Employment Project that is funded by the Organization of American States (OAS) Development Cooperation Fund, in collaboration with the Governments of Dominica.
The concept, according to Dr. Naraine, was developed and invented in St. Kitts, and the Organization of American States (OAS) has requested that it be replicated in Dominica.
“This model of hydroponics is an invention because we have combined three techniques in one growth chamber. The three techniques are: one is Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), two is Aero-ponics, and three is Ebb-and-Flow, so there the efficiency is much greater, whereas all others or most other hydroponic systems that we know of use only one technique,” he explained.
Dominica is one of the five regional countries where this technique is being introduced with compliments of the OAS.
It doesn’t matter what new technique we bring
To the farmers unless there’s market for the produce
It makes no sense sorry but it’s true
This a Wonderful and grand initiative for all of here in Dominica to benefit from. Fantastic and visionary development on the part of the OAS and a feat of invention on the part of our St. Kitts and Nevis bros & sis. May maximum benefit be attained from this novel and revolutionary Hydroponics here in the Nature Isle.
Blessings!
This farming is not to be trusted and we MUST insist that all food on sale in Dominica that is grown hydroponically must be labelled as such.
The video below shows a fish that was grown hydroponically. It just would not die!!!!!
Even when its spine was cut, its still trying to bite people. This is really scary.
The best way to grow food is to use soil that is NOT tainted by pesticides which are killing us and contributing to high levels of obesity, cancers, and CNCD\’s.
