A new pineapple variety is being introduced on the island.

This initiative is being led by the Division of Agriculture in collaboration with the Nature Island Pineapple Producers Association (NIPPA)and the BAM Programme.

Twenty thousand tissue culture plantlets of pineapple variety, MD2 are currently being hardened in preparation for distribution.

GIS News spoke with Diana Henry, officer in charge of national pineapple production. She says work began in July.

“The plants will remain in the shade house for about six weeks then they will be distributed to farmers. Most of the farmers are from NIPPA.

Henry notes that validation or tester plots will first be cultivated island wide.

“Since MD2 is new, we will be doing validation plots to see how the plants acclimatise to different areas of the island. Then from these validation plots, we will get information as to where best the plants can be grown and we will encourage the farmers of those localities to grow more of [that variety].”

MD2 is expected to significantly boost the pineapple sector.

“It is one of the prime varieties for processing,” she said. “Most of the equipment beign manufactured are with that variety in mind. That is the number one reason for getting these plantlets.”

20,000 more plantlets are also expected in time.

Its not about being narrow minded, people need to know what they are eating, we can`t just welcome new ideas and not receive information on it/them. Lets use common sense.

        True That
I dont think it is fair to refer to 4-cars as narrow minded. A lot of us are concerned about GMO Varieties being introduced not only here but all over the world. Europe has banned close to 60% of foods coming from the US. There is a movement against GMO foods that has been known to cause many of the disease Cancer being the no 1. Please research on Monsanto Co. Also read about what Bill Gates is doing in Africa in regards to GMO. The big corporations are patenting the seeds while they are wiping all indigenous plants, while they replace them with GMOs. We need to safeguard our country against this invasion..We are accepting without educating. Look at our Citrus & Bananas, etc. They are lace with disease then they send the GMO. Read Brother READ.

Sometimes you need to take risk to develop in life. taking a loan is a risk that most people take. So why can’t the Government take a little risk.

Eastofmind saying and believing that you’re eating healthy doesn’t mean that you are healthy. Majority of us get sick and die because of what we eat. Some produce from the market is just filled with chemical such as miracle grow which is very unhealthy, you purchase it and you don’t even know that your slowly killing yourself. Tin stuff and meat are still filled with chemical so all how you turn around your eating unhealthy.
