DNO POLL: Morocco-funded hotel should not be moved to Cabrits

The result of a online DNO poll, which was patronized by 835 voters, has shown that government should not have moved a Morocco-funded hotel to Cabrits.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit recently announced plans to construct a hotel in Mellville Hall but a decision was later taken to relocate it to Cabrits. The decision to move was said to be based on “sound analysis”.

The result of the poll shows that 45 percent or 385 voters believed the hotel should not have been  moved to Cabrits while 43 percent or 363 voters believed it should. 11 percent or 87 voters said they were not sure whether it should have been moved or not.

The poll asked whether it was justifiable to move the new hotel to Cabrits.

DNO poll is not a scientific poll.

The US$13-million hotel is being financed by Morocco after diplomatic relations were established between that nation and Dominica in 2010.

Construction of  the hotel has already begun in Cabrits.

Some of the craziest arguments or debates could really be found on this forum! Most times they really makes no sense. As a proud and concerned Dominican i would love to see the right type of developement come to the shores of my island, with not so much concern as to where it is being built since the donors or contributers could have chosen any other island in the caribbean! So my friends be it Marigot,Portsmouth or Penville it’s all Dominica.

stupes the building started already so this makes no sense, and let me add that marigot has nothing to entertain tourists at the moment so this resort there would be useless, and over nighties don’t need a whole resort do they?

one school for Cabrits and the other against

    Poll suggestions to ADMIN
    1) “Do you think the government should go ahead and build the state house”

    2) “Does Dominica need a president” (after the poll results list the functions Dominica’s president)

Did Skerritt and the rest of the cabinet discuss and agree that when Skerrittt went to Morocco that funds would be sought to build a hotel in Dominica? What did the agreement state? The hotel had to be built in Marigot? Was a new agreement signed between Dominica and Morocco as the previous location was suddenly changed? You see Dominicans, Skerritt and his DLP Govt. keep people in the dark all the time. Nobody knows what exactly that agreement entails, just like the MOU with China or Venezuela and ALBA.

It is strange that Skerritt announced initially that the hotel would be built in Marigot, but it was Ian Douglas who first brought up the idea of a change of location and then Savarin supported Douglas. Skerritt himself has yet to explain why the change of location? If the location has changed will the cost be the same or more? Is the hotel being built in the Cabrits National Park or World heritage Site? What do the laws say as it pertains to building a Hotel in the National Parks or Heritage sites? What will be the Impact? What about the EIA? Was one submitted and approved? Something is Fishy and Dominicans will remain in the dark, because information is hard to come by as regards such agreements.

Well what is the sense of this. Come to Portsmouth and the Cabrits area and see that the preparatory work is well underway. The whole place is cleared and fenced, the workers buildings are being finished. The hotel is on its way. It cannot be moved now.

I am still puzzled. Wasn’t that sound analysis available when Mtr. Skerrit put the proposal to our Moroccan sponsors when he made his visit and made a case for an airport hotel, located at Melville Hall? If construction has indeed commenced at the Carits location one must surmise that this is illegal in the absence of planning approval and an E.I.A. There is for instance the question of sewage/gray water disposal, which because of the location of the site would have to be located below sea level with the adherent danger of seepage into the marine environment. If am concerned it is because so little time appears to have lapsed between the change in location for all the necessary safeguards to have been put into place. The Govt. must have valid reasons for this sudden change and I would ask them to expound them in their own interest, if only to put a stop to speculation and political sniping.

YOU TALK JUST LIKE EDISON JAMES. DID HE WRITE DOWN THIS COMMENT SO THAT YOU WOULD HAVE POSTED FOR HIM? IT HAS COME TO THE POINT THAT EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN DOMINICA IS ILLEGAL ACCORDING TO THE UWP. YOU MUST BE A MOUTH PIECE OF THEIRS. THE PEOPLE OF PORTSMOUTH DESERVE TO HAVE THIS HOTEL JUST AS MUCH AS MARRIGOT DOES. SECONDLY, THE PM CAN CHANGE HIS MIND TO THAT IF HE SO CHOOSES. SO STOP BEING AN IDIOT FOR THE UWP AND ACCEPT PROGRESS FOR THE ISLAND WHEREVER IT IS.

I too am a devoted Dominican. I am neither a supporter of the UWP, nor do I need Mr. James, or anyone else for that matter to formulate thoughts on my behalf, I can think for myself thank you! This would be illegal, not according to the UWP, DLP, Freedom party or any other party or organisation but according to the laws of the land. Of course the people of Portsmouth are as deserving as those of Marigot and as a devoted Dominican you should know that and care about everyone equally. Political rhetoric ha no place in this.

Why dont you think for yourself let’s just put politic a side ask yourself the question when the GOVT approached the GOVT of MOROCCO were they discussing a hotel adjacent to the Meville Hall Airport and why did Mr.Skeritte announced to the people of DOMINICA that a hotel will be built at Melville Hall and funded by the Marocco Govrt, so why all of a sudden it’s not going to be and it have now moved to the Cabrits in Portsmouth.
What happened to changed the original plan and what excuss did Sheritte and his GOVT gave to the GOVT of Morocco for moving the hotel we would like to know but we are asking the wronge guys maybe it’s time that we hear from the Morocco Govt instead.
Another thing ask the GOVT of DLP how many local projects that they have going and I mean funded by our Govt and not refering to the many hand outs those are the issues we need to know about .
