Gov’t has created enabling environment for fishermen

Darroux

Fishermen in the north are being encouraged to take advantage of the mechanisms which have been put in place by the ruling Dominica Labour Party government.

Fisheries Minister Kenneth Darroux made the disclosure at the official opening of the Portsmouth Fisheries Complex.

Darroux said fishing has now become the livelihood of several families in and around Dominica.

“Gone are the days when fishing was just a sea to mouth when the daily catch would be divided among the crew, some went into the family pot and the rest was sold in the family business,” he said.

Darroux said government has ensured that the enabling environment has been created for fishermen.

“We want you to be able to grow in the business, educate your children and feed them,” he added

Wonder if Darroux understands the meaning of enabling environment..Mr Darroux what is the price of a gallon of gas? Do we have any trawlwers? Well Darroux even in 2011, fishing is largely a sea to mouth business, under this administration…ARE YOU NOT ASHAMED? STOP SHAMING YOURSELF…!!

A new fisheries complex is a welcome addition to infrastructure in Portsmouth. However a fisheries complex in itself does not provide the ‘enabling environment’ for fisheries development.

Fishermen and government must work together to ensure that the facility is well maintained and managed and that fishermen have access to ongoing training in fishing methods, fisheries sustainability, care of fish products, marketing and business management etc. Failure to address all the pieces required for development of the sector will result in a white elephant on the Portsmouth waterfront. That would be very sad. Let’s all work to avoid that.

    Kudos on the complex

I want to mention though that the authorities should inform the fishermen that indiscriminately casting their nets and causing the deaths of thousands of small fish is reducing the number of the larger fish that they’re trying to catch. It’s a popular practice in Portsmouth that is causing widespread destruction of the marine ecosystem and if it isn’t stopped the fisheries complex will have little purpose beyond that of a landmark in the coming decades.

Food for thought, see how long it takes to digest.

I quite agree with K0raz – the Government need to be highlighting to the fishermen that fishing sustainably will not only feed them and their families and businesses, but also future generations.

i am reading this in the usa and I’m wondering why does the “labour party goverment” takes so much credit for micro managing an infrastruture like the fisheries industry.
Why not the private sector with oversight by a goverment agency. Why?

    • ?????
      June 3, 2011

Because the Private Sector not managing the industry. It is the Governent who manages the Industry. Texas then come home to be part of the P Sector so you can probably manage !!! LOL

Why ask why? It’s Dominica. Politics is numbers: one, two and three on the list of priorities.
