Tax defaulters warned; names to be published

The Inland Revenue Division says it will make public the names of default income tax payers this year.

March 31 is the deadline set to file in taxes and the Division says it is trying to get all those who are entitled, to do so voluntarily.

Comptroller Irvin Williams said Dominican law allows for the publishing of names of those who do not pay taxes or file in tax returns.

The Inland Revenue Division appeals yearly for individuals to file in and to do so on time; the measure to expose delinquents, if applied this time around, will be new for the Division.

“People will have to learn this year,” Williams said.

The Division starts “Tax awareness week” today, March 21, to inform Dominicans about its role and the filing of taxes. The week is usually meant to urge people to pay their taxes and file in by the deadline set.

A ceremony to launch tax awareness week and a church service will be held at the Pastoral Centre this morning.

I hope all those in Government who think they are too big and above the law to pay tax will have their names published too. It is a known fact that those in power never pay, when they are the ones who can afford to pay and should set the example. Yet they are allowed to not pay while once again it is the poor man who is expected to take up the slack. We need a watchdog to monitor ministers and senior officers tax payments.

One of the main reasons people don’t pay all their taxes is because they can’t really afford it. It would be better if you give some amnesty of sorts itstead of this draconian measure which will only cause bad blood and cause people to creatively evade taxes in manners the income-tax will never be able to catch.
In the meanwhile foreign businessmen bold-facely evade the VAT and the IRD afraid to touch them.

@ Hugo Grotuis….Jesus’ response to that question was render to Caesar what is Caesar’s and render to God what is God. So Caesar’s portion would be what we call income tax.

The Division should place as much emphasis on refunding persons who have overpaid on their taxes as they do on collecting taxes due! The charge a late fee when taxes owed are not settled on time, but who compensates the taxpayer for loss of use/cost of funds when they take up to 3/4 years to process a refund???!!! This is why press releases like this one pisses me off!

Do as the law permits you to, however, i would relly appreciate if you would publish the list of those whom you owe money (tax returns) from 2000. I definitely would make that list Mr. Comptroller.

Interesting piece. You know, I often wonder about how paying tithe to the church and paying taxes to the government are related. When the bible said that you should pay tithe, was it talking about paying taxes? Or does it ask you to pay both? I think it’s asking you to pay just one. The government is in charge and they will send me to jail if I don’t pay taxes, so I think the government should take some of my tax money I paying them and give it to the church. If they do that, the church could stop asking for money every minute like that.

Is that the only measure that is allowed by law – i.e. publishing people’s name for all to see? Could someone in the know educate me on this? Because I think it would be more effective to levy fines and penalties than to just publish people’s name. Hell, if I were owing taxes and the only thing the gov’t will do is put my name in the paper, I would not give a rat’s behind!! Publish all you want but my money in my pocket! So, please someone, let me know what other methods gov’t could use that would be more productive.

There are fines for filing late. But is still pay they will not pay. The government has to start putting liens on people’s salaries and bank accounts, and start requiring income tax clearance at our ports to red flag these people when they trying to leave the country. (Its in place but not enforced. I cannot tell when last they ask me for that when i travelling) Especially for the business places that collecting VAT but refuse to remit it to the state. How are they renewing their business licence and continuing to do business without working out a payment plan with the IRD? This is beyond comprehension.

You must be kidding !!!!! That is some of our problem in DA- too much church and not enough spirituality. Skerrit and St. Jean also attend church on a regular basis and call God’s name in vain.
Yet stil they hate their enemies——– more church willnot solve Da’s problems.

That is not true the bible speaks of a tithe not an income tax, Income Tax is created by man is evil and wicked, the pharisees tried to trap Jesus with a question on the income tax, as they knew it was not biblical.
