Will Venezuela invest in LIAT?

liat1Venezuela has expressed an interest in investing in regional air carrier LIAT, according to Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

The Prime Minister made that disclosure during a press conference this week to announce that Dominica would be making another financial contribution to the Caribbean carrier.

“I believe it is an absolutely good move if we were to get Venezuela to invest in LIAT to provide LIAT with the much needed financial and technical support that it requires. It could also mean additional business for LIAT,” Skerrit said.

More money for LIAT from a US 65 MILLION dollar LOAN approved by CDB for the 4 shareholders. Dont know if that works out to be an iqual distribution of the loan which would be somehere in the region of US 16.25 MILLION dollars per country… The national debt still under 1.0 Billion!!!

DNO is reporting,Skerrit had a PRESS CONFERENCE to discuss Venezuela’s interest in investing in LIAT and Skerrit believes its an absolute good move. Why does every time Skerrit opens his mouth, it is a case of I,I,I. By the way was D.N.O., a reporter from Q95 present. Was Matt Peltier, or Carlye JohnBaptist,Lennox Linton, a reporter from the Chronicle and the Sun present. I would not be surprised if Kairi, DBS and DaVibes were present.

I see this as yet another manifestation of Skerrit’s madcap scheme of “integration” with Venezuela. The new ambassador of that country was appointed to drive exactly that mission. Skerrit’s dream is for the OECS to become an integrated overseas dominion of Alba (i.e. Venezuela) with himself in charge of that territory but with access to Venezuela’s finances. Be warned the fixed exchange rate between the E.C.$. and the U.S.$. is under threat.

Who is investing in LIAT? “Venezuela.” Who will make the profit? “Venezuela.” Does Dominica own LIAT? NO NO NO. Too many games in this Administration, that’s why they are on their way out. I can’t wait for that day to come. What a jubilee it will be in Dominica.

Now……again it just shows how retarded the Dominican Goernment really is……
1st Point—–They spent millions on Night Landing(hasn’t turned a profit)
2nd point—–they spent more millions on Infrastructure(more planes are not landing)
3rd Point—–Are these guys for real Venezuela!!! you guys need to Visit Venezuela and you would understand….

One day all this rubbish will Stop, We will have our Justice and we will have Pride in our country once again…..skerrit and his Boys with toys has go to go…..Peace

I am gravely concerned. Only last week the Eu lifted its ban on Venezuela’s national airline Conviasa, prohibiting it from operating in EU airspace “due to serious safety deficiencies”. Mr. Skerrit really wants Venezuela get involved with LIAT with a record like that? I sincerely question his logic at times.

Based on my observation of the position that our policy makers have taken on the need for our own international airport, I am left to wonder where they were schooled and during what era.

You mean to tell me these people can’t see the benefits of travelers from Europe, USA and Canada having direct same day access to Dominica? Give me a break!

That nonsense about there are jet airports all around us is simply ridiculous.

No wonder our tourism industry has been labelled the region’s best example of a “crippled industry at its infancy” yearning to walk but is being impeded by a set of foolish advisers and policy makers.

If this idiotic position as it relates to an international for Dominica was making sense, tell me how comes it made no sense to St Vincent?

I travel frequently and God knows direct flights costs less and people simply do not have the money required to literally pay for two tickets when you can get to a destination for half the cost.

    Cinderella please wake up.
Oh Dominica, all your potential is being wasted away.

Thats why your mouth cant close your teeth to big with all what u just say ask SVG why thier economy in shambles like every where else.

    • July 19, 2013

I fully agree with you. Not only we have to buy two tickets, we have to pay for our luggage and carry-on. I think that even if we had to pay for the luggage and carry-on it would be only once, but to pay twice for that is shameful.

Investing in LIAT is like investing in slavery again. LIAT just treated an eight (8) year old child like UNCLAIMED BAGGAGE on a flight from St. Maarten to Guyana. That flight NEVER made it to Guyana, CANCELLED ACCORDING TO LIAT in Antigua and LIAT returned the child, WITHOUT HER LUGGAGE, to St. Maarten and DID NOT even notify her relatives until the airport was closing.

LIAT IS A DISGRACE. WHY INVEST IN A COMPANY THAT IS NOT MAKING ANY PROFITS, ACCORDING TO THEM.

    • Jay
      July 20, 2013

You have very valid point there. Having to use more than one flight is troublesome enough but LIAT’s schedules take little account of connecting with larger, intercontinental carriers. It is not unusual to have to hang around Barbados or Antigua for over eight hours after coming in from Dominica on LIAT. We really are treated as an incidental nuisance by LIAT.

The benefit is for LIAT to continue flying and to bring visitors and residents alike to our island. If you do not understand that, you are short sighted.

      July 19, 2013

LIAT has been coming to Da for more than 30 yrs now, so investment or not DLP or not they will come.
By the way , this is the last term of DLP
      nonesense.

    • July 19, 2013

We do not need LIAT for that. There are OTHER OPTIONS. LIAT need to UPDATE their POLICY, show us that it need to keep FLYING. I guess because Roosevelt has a VESTED INTEREST in LIAT he will make NO OTHER accommodations for us.

I say SHAME ON YOU, ROOSEVELT, for FORCING the citizens and visitors to COMPLY. Yes, I said it. SHAME ON YOU.

      • July 19, 2013

Correction – LIAT need to UPDATE ‘its’ POLICY.

From Curacao to Puerto Rico is 275US$ tax included, Jet BLUE ST-Maarten to New York JFK 350US$ tax included round trip 4 hours non-stop “thts when they hav specials”, All this way cheaper than Liat…Liat complains about high fuel ok fine. WIth all the millions the Caribbean Gov’ts pumping into tht Airline they can afford to hav a huge fuel storage facility, when fuel is at 50$ they can just buy buy n keep in storage,” reserve”.

Majority of the English Caribbean countries leaders are just plain wicked to their Ppl. RedJet was a good alternative to high airfare but wow again those Govn’ts gave tht company so much problems & red tap it had to go bust…

ALl this Caricom thing and their leaders are just outdated n a bunch of Hogwash B.S. Look to Caricom, majority of the countries in tht grouping are poor.. Its time for a change and it begins at home!

We the people of the Caribbean are tired of Liat. They are always giving us false pictures, they assured the public that when they sent the poor and underpaid workers home everything would be fine and they would now make millions but God works in different ways. They are cryng even more now, the Governments and Venzuela should stop putting money in a bottomless pit and the management just wasting it. Their top managements are paid better salaries than some Prime Ministers in the Caribbean whom they beg from

      July 19, 2013

totally agree..its prevailing paradigm in the caribbean actively sponsored by Liat itself..Liat propaganda articulates that if Liat gone it will be logistical and infrastructural collapse of the caribbean..so the islands should preserve the monopoly of Liat. History knows many examples of how monopoly actually played detrimental role in the economy development. I believe that Liat is actually is financial glutton which sucking enormous amount of money and then it asked to do something in retuirn its actually vomiting on you (bad service, permanent disruptions, mistakes, missing luggage etc)…only competitive environment there a lot of firms can compete through better routes, better pricing, service, additional services can make a difference…otherwise this Liat-zombie will exist for many decades and will continue to provide its ill-services…

    Aye Las poor Dominica

This summer, increased air service to St Lucia will be available so everyone from across the US is able to enjoy this perfect getaway. Added flight options include: daily service on JetBlue from JFK airport from June 13 until September 3, flights 6 days a week out of ATL airport on Delta from June 10 through August 11, and United Airlines will be offering Saturday nonstop flights from Newark starting July 13.

With added flights from these major airports, your vacation in St Lucia is only a short journey away

  21. Chris
    July 19, 2013

Maybe they should fly on it before they invests….so they can know what they are putting their money into…and can start correcting all the faults of the airline…or else we just adding more chef to the already rancid soup…
